Summary

A small girl is sent to live with foster parents on a farm in rural Ireland, without knowing when she will return home. In the strangers' house, she finds a warmth and affection she has not known before and slowly begins to blossom in their care. And then a secret is revealed and suddenly, she realizes how fragile her idyll is.

Winner of the Davy Byrnes Memorial Prize, Foster is now published in a revised and expanded version. Beautiful, sad and eerie, it is a story of astonishing emotional depth, showcasing Claire Keegan's great accomplishment and talent.

Lightweight

I did not enjoy this book and felt cheated by its brevity. It isn’t a novel. It’s really only a short story and in this case, not a well read one. The voice is too sharp and sounds too “stock Irish” and irritating. The “story” is disappointing and the ending is abrupt.

Wonderful

This is a stunning little book. A long short story / novella, it absolutely captures this isolated little girl as she is sent to stay with distant family members for a summer, while her mother is busy with a new baby. To say that you are with her until the story concludes is something of an understatement. It is so powerfully conveyed, I was astonished by it.

Beautiful

Deceptively simple, beautifully written, excellent narration.
A favourite of Maggie O'Farrell's I heard on the audible Graham Norton book club podcast.

A rich and heartwarming tale of rural Ireland in the early 80s

A rich and heartwarming tale of rural Ireland in the early 80s.

Whilst not as moving as Keegan’s most recent work, Small Things Like These, this was nonetheless a captivating story of one girl’s summer and the loving care she found within it.

really heart warming

Well it is a lovely simple, heart warming story but it was only just over an hour long which I hadn't realised until download.
