About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Colin Salmon known for his starring roles in Resident Evil and Alien Vs Predator. He is also known for his role as Charles Robinson alongside Pierce Brosnan's James Bond. This definitive recording includes an Introduction by Maurice Hindle, read by Peter Noble.

A terrifying vision of scientific progress without moral limits, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein leads the reader on an unsettling journey from the sublime beauty of the Swiss alps to the desolate waste of the arctic circle.

Obsessed with the idea of creating life itself, Victor Frankenstein plunders graveyards for the material with which to fashion a new being, shocking his creation to life with electricity. But this botched creature, rejected by its creator and denied human companionship, sets out to destroy Frankenstein and all that he holds dear. Mary Shelley's chilling gothic tale was conceived when she was only eighteen, living with her lover Percy Shelley near Lord Byron's villa on Lake Geneva. It would become the world's most famous work of Gothic horror, and Frankenstein's monster an instantly-recognisable symbol of the limits of human creativity.

Amazing book

Really great story, the narrator is a bit slow with his pauses, meaning he takes a while to say things and sounds really weird if you speed it up. Overall not an issue though, loved this book

Not my thing

Personally found the story to be bland. And the narrators voice isn’t the best for audio books in my opinions kind of ruined it

One of the greatest books of all time, but audiobook needs work

My review of the story itself can be found over on Goodreads (spoiler alert, it's objectively the best book I've ever read), however the audiobook itself could do with some work. The chapters aren't correctly labelled and misleading when compared to the physical book. What's more is that the book also has an introduction and two further short stories compiled at the end. None of those are read out here (compared to other Penguin Classics such as Dracula and Phantom of the Opera where their introductions are read out). I thought Colin Salmon did a decent job, though nothing groundbreaking. I'd have liked a few more accents and vocal range. His monotone, softly spoken approach was nice and soothing, but could have been coloured in a little more. I listened to this while reading along with the book and I highly recommend doing so to assist with some of the more elaborate language, but I could imagine it being a bit of a struggle if you were to listen to this without a physical accompaniment.

Great story let down by a mediocre narrator

the narration is annoyingly quiet! I feel ges trying but he borders on a whisper throughout the entire book. it sets an adequately sombre tone but it feels dull and monotone after a while. the story however is fantastic and I csn appreciate why its considered to be a classic!

Long, tedious, pointless, and boringly read

Slow narration with constant pauses mid sentence - painful! I found the story itself pointless and tiresome. I had been curious to experience the original narrative of Frankenstein and was sorely disappointed. My previous classic, Middlemarch, read by Juliet Stevenson was an absolute delight.
