Fridtjof Nansen war, wie sein Biograf Walter Bauer schreibt, "Polarforscher, Zoologe, Geograph, Meteorologe, Ozeanograph, Konstrukteur, Organisator, Schriftsteller, Professor und Rektor, Gesandter, Völkerbund-Delegierter, Hoher Kommissar und Friedensnobelpreisträger." 1888 durchquert er als erster Mensch Grönland und schließt Freundschaft mit den Inuit, deren faszinierende Lebensweise er monatelang studiert. Im Juli 1893 startet Fridtjof Nansen seine legendäre Expedition mit der "Fram" ins Nordpolarmeer: Er will als erster Mensch den Nordpol erreichen. Mit Absicht lässt er das Schiff im Packeis festfrieren, um sich mit den Meeresströmungen treiben zu lassen. Dann beschließt er, zu Fuß den Nordpol zu erreichen. Der eisigen Witterung unbarmherzig ausgeliefert, geht es auf dieser Expedition für Nansen uns seinen Begleiter Johansen mehr als einmal ums nackte Überleben.

Gut hundert Jahre später begibt sich der Schweizer Bergführer und Abenteurer Thomas Ulrich mit dem norwegischen Polarforscher Borge Ousland auf die Spur von Nansen ins ewige Eis. Er, der sich als moderner Abenteurer versteht, schildert hier seine spannendsten Erlebnisse.
