Summary

Many people will remember that Rachel Carson predicted a silent spring, but she also warned of a fruitless fall, a time with no pollination and no fruit. The fruitless fall nearly became a reality when, in 2007, beekeepers watched 30 billion bees mysteriously die. And they continue to disappear. The remaining pollinators, essential to the cultivation of a third of American crops, are now trucked across the country and flown around the world, pushing them ever closer to collapse. Fruitless Fall does more than just highlight this growing agricultural catastrophe. It emphasizes the miracle of flowering plants and their pollination partners, and urges readers not to take the abundance of our Earth for granted. A new afterword by the author tracks the most recent developments in this ongoing crisis.

Bee is for Brilliant!

What made the experience of listening to Fruitless Fall the most enjoyable?

A truly magical read and the narrator’s warm and whimsical style works well with the book’s subject matter. If you have an interest in bees or the natural environment this book is for you.

Entertaining and educational, I found this audio book difficult to put down. Well actually I put it down just long enough to contact the local beekeeper and ask him how I could get into beekeeping!

Rachel Carson is mentioned in this book and if you think about it ‘Silent Spring – Fruitless Fall’ this book is homage to and a continuation of the great lady’s environmental work.

Rowan Jacobsen (Author) and Rowell Gormon (Narrator) are the perfect pairing and will give you hours of pleasurable listening.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Hive naturally! Thousands of tiny creatures acting as a single intelligence, it really is mind blowing!.

What does Rowell Gormon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His effervescent voice and natural story telling abilities make it sound like he is speaking to you on an exclusive and personal level. A truly captivating narrator.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

'Listen to the Hive Bee-fore it's too late!'
