About this listen
For 1000 years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water and metal. But now, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, grows old and lacks an heir. Ambitious Lords manoeuvre to place their Houses in positions of power, and a war of succession looms on the horizon.
Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, young Tavi struggles with his lack of fury crafting. At 15, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat - return to the Valley, his world will change.
Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave. But Amara is actually a spy, seeking intelligence on possible Marat traitors to the Crown. And when the Valley erupts into chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Amara will find Tavi invaluable. His talents will outweigh any fury-born power - and could even turn the tides of war.

good but the recording has a few issues
I enjoyed the narration but the whole recording has a few jerky spots in it that sound like you accidentally skipped forward a few seconds.

OMG it's Tavi not Tarvi
his name is wrong the whole way , they have taken the canin sound as his name over his real one. Tavi is short for Octavian not Octarvian.

Excellent book
I loved the book and Kate Reading is excellent as usual. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I did find the editing a bit off at times though. In several places there was no time between the end of one sentence and the beginning of the next. This made listening a bit awkward. Add a second of silence between different audio segments please.

A great listen but the editing needed improving
A great introduction to this fantasy world. Kate Readings performance was great but whoever editted it cut the audio too close together which threw off some of the pacing

Technical issues with the recording
A choppy recording that skips forward all the time mars an otherwise great performance by Kate Reading.
The book itself is quite good, though its main flaw to me is that Jim Butcher sometimes repeats information wholesale, typically by having different characters verbosely say or discuss the same topic and come to the same conclusions/realisations as each other. This could have been tightened up in editing.
Overall though, a satisfying book in an interesting new fantasy world, with a very strong cast of characters.

Worth the second read!
This is one of the first proper series I chose to read when I was younger, and I read all of them without pause. Finding them as an audio book was quite the twist of fate, being able to enjoy them in a totally new way is something I’m looking forward to.
Butcher does a great job weaving a story, and Reading’s performance was very engaging. My only criticism comes in the form of audio editing, there are instances where the audio doesn’t follow properly or sentences are cut short and a new passage is being read. With this slight adjustment others would be able to enjoy the story as immensely as I did without feeling confused.

Good story but lacking originality
A problem with a lot of fantasy now. The story is good but seems to borrow a lot from Lord of The Rings , Game of Thrones with an element of Golden Compass. Very slow build up to story but that is understandable at the start of a series. However ending has frantic elements that leaves a lot unresolved and small parts that seems like a cliche. I am hoping the story builds and improves as series goes on which I have been told is true.
