About this listen

Gary Speed’s tragic death on November 27th, 2011, rocked the football world. Aged just 42, he was found hanged in the garage of his home. As a long-standing legend of the game and manager of Wales, he appeared to have everything to live for.

Now, as he would have approached his 50th birthday, family and friends come together to speak honestly and emotionally about the man they knew and loved. Wife Louise opens her heart for the first time and talks in depth about her life with Gary and her own personal journey since his death. Mum Carol and dad Roger recall their beloved son. And a multitude of famous names from the game remember their friend and speak emotionally about how the tragedy has touched their own lives.

Author John Richardson was a close friend of the man he knew as ‘Speedo’ and was entrusted to write his autobiography. Gary completed two chapters of his life story before putting the project on hold because he thought he had not achieved enough in the game to merit a book. For the first time, these revealing chapters are published in the original form they were written, with insights from Richardson on the personal story that would remain so sadly untold.

This is a unique celebration of one of the football heroes of our generation. It’s a tribute to a role model, leader and much-loved husband, father and son, gone too soon.

The saddens of not finding the right support at the right time. Not being able as a man to explore one's own feelings.

Even the best can suffer

Loved it all, I had the pleasure of meeting Gary when he took the Sheffield United managers job. A polite and knowledgeable man with a million dollar smile. Glad Louise and the boys are doing well and moving on and thanks for sharing this beautiful story with us all.

Cathartic

Tragic story of a great footballer and man. Despite its non-linear structure, it is still very easy to follow. Although it covers memories from a host of great names, my only criticism is that it is very repetitive. RIP Speedo.

Insight into a footballer’s works

Although occasionally repetitive this is a very interesting account of a much loved man and the very sad event of his death . Excellent to hear the views and memories of so many who knew him and to get an insight through them of the way the world of football works .

Just so sad

This is such a sad story. His wife, sons and parents sound unbelievably string but the pain for them will be horrendous. If only he had turned to someone for help. Please let his passing be a door that opens for others who are struggling to ask for help.

Tragically fascinating.

If one found it hard to finish it was because of the tragic nature of the narrative. However with this being expected it was a fascinating insight into the life of this once great football icon and the huge impact his passing had on many others.

Great listen about a great man

As someone who used to work at the Wales Football HQ, I can only echo what others have said about Gary Speed. A true gent who would always take a moment to have a chat & would always ask how you were doing.
I’ve struggled very recently with mental health issues & it saddens me to think that Gary felt he couldn’t ask anyone for help when he would have so much support around him from family, colleagues & groups as mentioned in this book.
