Summary

Discover these horror stories of the Victorian era, with Gothic tales from J. S. Lee Fanu. This definitive audio version is narrated by Jilly Bond and brings the classic horrors of old to a new audience.

Ghostly Tales by J. S. Le Fanu is brought to audio for the first time. Dim the lights and listen to these unsettling tales of Victorian horror. Fanu is described as a "master of the genre" by subsequent distinguished authors such as E. F. Bleiler. Victorian horror stories were largely formularic in composition, with tales of stereotypical spectral figures in white. Fanu's unique approach helped to usher in a new, more psychological era of dread. His distinctive writing style helped him to become one of the most revered authors of his time. Listen for yourself and discover why.

Two great ghost stories

Two of the best 19th century ghost stories I’ve listened to. What was clever about them was that the events that occurred could have a natural explanation. This uncertainty helps these stories rise above many of the cliched ridden stories of le fanus contemporaries. The author is also a excellent at creating atmosphere, and a sense of unease pervades both these stories. The narrator I found to be superb and really brings her feel and understanding of the text to life. There’s also a lovely mini biography of le fanu at the end. It’s just a pity there aren’t more stories included.

Wonderfully narrated eerie tales.

It’s great to have the opportunity to listen to J.S. Le Fanu’s work. It’s brought to life with brilliant narration and the stories themselves linger long after the audio has stopped! Highly recommended.

Evocative narration

Jilly Bond ensures that my first encounter with Le Fanu is a satisfyingly chilly one. The first tale might seem a tame contribution to the genre, but it is the restraint and subtlety that delivers a relentless creeping dread.
By comparison, the Bram Stoker retelling of the second story is not as successful in evoking the accursed house as Le Fanu is here.
Highly recommended for fans of gothic and ghostly tales.
