Summary

A spate of murders, deranged scientists, and heavily armed mercenaries - little wonder there's a state of panic at Scotland Yard.

Chief Inspector Brian Hooley has a plan, and it won't make him popular. He wants to bring back autistic detective Jonathan Roper. Currently suspended on misconduct charges, his condition, coupled with a relentless work ethic, makes Roper a unique investigator with observational skills that allow him to see what others miss. But he is also a complex man who doesn't get social boundaries, and plenty of his colleagues just don't like him.

Hooley doesn't care about that. He knows Roper is the one to make a difference.

What follows is a roller-coaster ride, with the veteran cop about to find out what it's like to be the subject of Roper's unflinching gaze as his personal habits face intense scrutiny.

This special relationship is warmly observed and provides a comic contrast to a darkly compelling story where the pair is pushed to the limit.

Disappointing

Very strange sing song narration. It was almost as if he was bored. Very difficult to judge if this is a good book

Gripping

This book held my attention by its sharp twists and turns, together with the sensitive characteristics of its two lead characters.
In parts it even made me smile a very insightful book.

Brilliant

While I found this a bit hard to get into initially, I actually think it's an excellent book and very well written. Well worth it!

one to avoid,

both the book and the narrator. Full of seemingly unnecessary violence, shallow character building and bad research. ie treating autism as a kind of super brainiac thing rather than a disability. Finished it because Amazon seems to have gone on the blink so l couldnt swap it. Its decided me to give up on audible.

Seriously under par

I hoped to have found a - to me - new writer with a series of books to jump onto. After having listened to over 500 titles over the past 10 years, finding something to my liking isn't easy.

Well, this wasn't it!

Story
Mediocre at best and getting worse towards the end. The storyline has no depth whatsoever, the characters are 1-dimensional and in the latter part, it feels like even the writer can’t wait to put the tale out of its misery.

Narration
Not suited to the story and setting. The narrator’s voice - though somewhat jarring to the ear after a while - would be perfect for portraying a stiff upper lip brigadier in a WWII drama, but not so much for contemporary characters and he should stay well away from any kind of accents.

I finished the book, which ended like a lead balloon, but it won’t be hard to resist the rest of this writer’s exploits!
