About this listen

"You've gone all fat and complacent because you've got your man, haven't you?"

Polly Penhalligan is outraged at the suggestion that since getting married to Nick and settling into their beautiful manor farmhouse in Cornwall, she has let herself go. But watching a lot of telly and gorging on biscuits, not getting dressed until lunchtime, and waiting for pregnancy to strike are not the signs of someone living an active and fulfilled life. So Polly does something rash.

She allows her home to be used as a location for a TV advert. Having a glamorous film crew around will certainly put a bomb under the idyllic, rural life. Only perhaps, she should have consulted Nick first.

Because before the cameras have even started to roll - and complete chaos descends on the farm - Polly's marriage has been turned upside down. This time she really has gone too far....

Good story, wrong narrator

I love Catherine Alliott but unfortunately the narrator was too slow and even sounded bored at times.

Dreadfully edited

A brilliantly funny story absolutely ruined by lack of editing. There were so many mistakes, pauses so long that I had to check to see if the app had crashed and sounds of tape being rewound on numerous occasions and lines being re-read. One chapter even featured sound effects of the narrrators throat being cleared on several occasions. Honestly, don't bother listening, go and buy the paper version and you won't be disappointed by Alliott's quick wit and hillariously far fetched escapism.

Great story, shame about the editing errors etc

Really love Catherine Alliott books.
Great story, but took a REALLY long time to get used to the narrator - really didn't think her voice suited the character. Also clearly recorded whilst in lockdown as there are numerous errors in the recording with lots of re recording of phrases that haven't been edited out. Editor's really need to check and re edit it.

To dragged out!

Disappointing. Not enough story and too much how Poppy was feeling and what she was thinking. I found this hard going and not up to previous CA books I have read.

One of my old favourites

I read this book when it first came out. It’s quite dated now but a nice comfortable story, however the editing isn’t great and the voice is rather old-fashioned not suited to the character.

Narration could be better

Love the novel but the narration is much too slow and not improved by the narrator's flat tone.

Great story, poor production and narration

I absolutely love Catherine Alliott so I didn’t hesitate to purchase her new title. The story itself doesn’t disappoint. As usual it’s a nice little piece of entertaining escapism, easy to digest and dip in and out of when relaxing. The production of the audio book however is abysmal. The editing leaves a lot to be desired with a lot of retakes of the recording and narration mistakes remaining in the final release. I also find the narrator un-engaging and off putting. It’s not common for me to leave reviews but I am so disappointed by this poor product that I wanted to warn other people from spending their money or credits until the issues with it are addressed.

This could be vintage Catherine Alliott...

... if it wasn't for the dreadful, dreadful narrator! Not only reminiscent of an inferior Pauline McLynn (of Father Ted) 'doing' posh, but weird timing - often drifting off in the middle of a sentence - and then there's the unedited throat clearing. Why does Audible have no quality control and if it has to be an American reader of such a quintessentially English book, why not pick one who can do it? Two hours in and I'm not sure I'll make it... ..ps .. I did make it through to the end, in spite of her rather than because as she didn't improve - the closing chapters, where things were getting exciting, delivered in a bizarrely vague tone, as if she was exhausted, poor thing. All became clear with the closing credits - this was produced by CA's American publisher...

worst narrator ever heard thought this was a joke

constant coughing repeating and sounded as though she was constantly pouring out tic tacs.

Narrator makes a good book bad

Narrators voice doesn’t suit the book or character, not to mention the breaks to cough which haven’t been edited out. Not worth downloading, choose another Alliott book.
