Karl's beery nights, fistfights, and barking followed him into a 35-year coaching career. In a game defined by big stakes and bigger egos, rabid fans and an unforgiving media, Karl was hired and fired a dozen times.

Tying together the two strands of McCallum's story is Hall of Famer West, the ferociously competitive Laker guard who later became one of the key architects of the Warriors.

The John Scott story is the ultimate underdog narrative in sports during 2016 when Scott - in the twilight of his career - went from a joke All-Star fan-voted nominee to scoring two goals and winning the All-Star Game's MVP title. This is his heartwarming story about an average Joe who became a sports superhero overnight. Known as a willing-and-able fighter and bruiser in the league, John Scott was a surprising and tongue-and-cheek nominee for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game.

Summary
"I want to start conversations and, even better, arguments." (From the Introduction)
One of the most outspoken and original voices in sports sounds off while revealing his incredible life story.
Jalen Rose has never been quiet. Not as a kid growing up in Detroit in the '70s and '80s. Not as the brash, trash-talking leader of the legendary "Fab Five" at the University of Michigan. Not as the player under the stewardship of Hall of Famers Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas, and others throughout his 13-year NBA career. And certainly not as a commentator and analyst on ABC/ESPN and Grantland.
In Got to Give the People What They Want, no topic is off limits.
Honest, unfiltered, unbiased. Raw, refreshing, real. This colorful collection of stories and opinions about basketball and life gives people the kind of insight and understanding they don't get anywhere else in the sports world.

Amazing book - a MUST download / read
I downloaded this book on audible the day it came out and listened to it all in a day. This book truly gives the people what they want and left me wanting more (Bill Simmons alluded to 294 more stories in the fireword, maybe some day the other stories will be told).
Here are some thoughts:
1) Jalen is a great entertainer and storyteller.
Jalen does an excellent job of telling his life story and taking you behind the velvet rope of his life. It is an amazing one!
2) Jalen does an excellent job of highlighting certain issues that exist in society (a) the NCAA and (b) the issue of race in society and its impact in his life and the lives of those around him.
Jalen has a unique perspective when it comes to the NCAA and his upbringing gives him a differentiated perspective on life growing up in an urban neighborhood and the struggles one sees. Also he addresses how racism has adversely impacted several of his closest family and friends.
3) Jalen is a humble guy and even though this book could have been one ego trip (after all, the man is JALEN ROSE), Jalen gives credit to the unsung heroes that have shaped his life.
I am big fan of Jalen and his media work / basketball body of work. After reading the book, I am even more of a fan.

Inspiring, plenty of basketball and other things too.
Admittedly, I am a huge Jalen Rose fan. This is mainly from listening to his podcast and seeing his basketball commentary. This book is wonderful. I was impressed to see a more serious tone on various issues presented in a thoughtful and organized manner.
This book is, surprisingly, light on NBA basketball details and more of a discussion on inner-city, race, and the challenges the youth currently face. This is a huge issue that is conveniently ignored by most because they are physically disconnected from the urban environment or feel the situation is hopeless.
Jalen's stories and efforts provide a fresh perspective and inject much-needed hope into a dire situation. This honest recollection of his experiences makes him a great role model not only for young athletes but also for aging guys that blow open lay ups and more closely resemble Bill Simmons than a member of the fab five, like myself. It forces us in the latter group to confront serious issues that we may, otherwise, conveniently ignore.
Jalen's narration is top notch and flows similar to a podcast. Jalen is inspiring and accountable. I highly recommend this book.

Jalen inspires with his story and action
Jalen is unapologetic for the life he has lead, giving the people what they want: a behind the scenes perspective on growing up in Detroit, his experiences as college and pro player, and his transition to one of the most prominent sports personalities today. He addressed his pain and passion: proving the doubters wrong while acknowledging the harsh realities he had to overcome along the way. Most will appreciate the stories; all will appreciate his willingness to be honest and offer solutions to many issues that are commonly misunderstood.

Flagrant Philosophy and the Inside Stuff!
Jalen Rose is becoming a mogul, and Got to Give the People What They Want delivers his entry into the writers' world. With a thriving podcast and several media posts covering all levels of basketball, Jalen is as equipped to write stories as he is to tell them!
As a gift for the basketball junky in your life, or a listen for yourself, this book pays off with oh-so-much savory inside detail, while keeping it classy (don't get fired!). Still, as sanitized as many accounts tend to be, Jalen ruffles the feathers of the AAU, NCAA and even the NBA, calling out individuals for their parts in the bigger, more corrupt schemes of things.
Still, he is not bitter, and each story is riveting! Also, the stories are told as teachable moments, and not to glorify greed or corruption in any way. Thus, you could give this to an 11 year old white kid, or to a 65 year old African American woman, or to literally anyone in between, and it would have an impact. Pop the trunk with Jalen and get Tao with the furious leader of the Fab Five! #jalenrose
