Summary

When Sally's husband Charlie says he's leaving her, she makes him go at once. As a child growing up in Dublin, she never had friends thanks to her lonely, secretive unmarried mother who kept her at home with her. A succesful actress, she can effortlessly mimic others, but who is she, herself? With desperate courage she decides to visit her grandfather, a shadowy figure, in the forlorn hope that she can unlock the door to her past.

Critic reviews

"...the structure is masterly, and the writing pungent." (The Times)
"Shocking yet redemptive, this is a classical tragedy reinvested with chilling contemporary relevance." (The Observer)"Johnston has written a powerful book. She sensitively examines those themes - of paternity, of reality - that have always been the domain of literature... [Her] literary references never complicate her writing, but illuminate it, creating a rich and perceptive blend of poetry and experience." (Times Literary Supplement)

nothing new

Before a quarter of the book had been read I guessed the outcome. Old plot. The voice of the reader sounds older than the person it is supposed to be. An easy listen but nothing special.
