Summary

Mike Phillips is one of Welsh rugby's most decorated players. With multiple Grand Slams and Lions tours under his belt, he was revered all over the world for his aggressive, in-your-face style of play. Off the field, his early years were littered with controversy and scandal as he wrestled with the new-found fame that success brought.

In this brutally honest, tell-all autobiography, Mike reveals his run-ins with the police on the streets of Cardiff, what really went on inside the Wales and Lions dressing rooms and the truth behind that fateful night outside McDonald’s, when a scrape with a bouncer saw him hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons on the eve of a World Cup training camp. He also discusses the personal turmoil that, at times, engulfed him and how he was able to block it all out to become one of the best players in the world.

Phillips opens up about every aspect of his much talked about career, from the many glorious highs to struggling with fame, coping with pressure, dealing with rejection and retirement while ultimately finding personal peace and happiness. He lifts the lids on his relationship with Warren Gatland and talks about the big characters in the dressing room, from Sam Warburton to Dan Carter. Mike Phillips' Half Truths: My Triumphs, My Mistakes, My Untold Story is a no-holds barred account of a rugby life lived to the full, revealing the real man behind the legend.

Half Truths - more like “Half cut”

This is a guide to Phillips epic drinking career as much as a record of his undoubted stellar rugby career - maybe a bit repetitive in that respect - even in the professional era this superstar survived big session after big session and it must have been fun!

Fantastic read for any rugby fan

Great book and well narrated . A real insight into Mikes life and what made him tick. He was an icon and loved by the Welsh and a loveable rogue to those he played against. Very funny and a great stroll down memory lane! So many games were referenced I was at and what a fantastic last sentence to end upon. Well done Mike and good luck in Dubai

Enjoyable

An enjoyable book but would have benefitted from being read by a Welsh speaker or someone able to pronounce Welsh names and place names.

Great book, worthy of a great player.

This was a great listen. No holds barred approach as you would expect from Mike. Spoken from the heart, giving a fantastic insight into his life and career. Definitely one of the best players of his era and one of the most entertaining. Such a shame he wasn’t given his 100th cap, but the fans know the real deal. I don’t think there’ll be another like Mile Phillips. Buy the book, you’ll enjoy it.

Couldn’t cope with the narrator!

As expected good stories from a rugby great. However the narrator was awful. Not a personal dog at him, but someone better would bring the book to life a bit more. Shame.

Great book - awful narrator

Loved hearing Mike Phillips story but it was spoilt in my opinion by the narrator constantly mispronouncing simple names and places.

learn the names!!!

enjoyed the book. but you would think if your being paid to read something you would learn the pronunciation of the names takes away from the storytelling

Let the p;ayers read tehir own books

I was really unimpressed by the performance of this reader. He clearly does not bother with rugby on a day-to-day basis and as a result, his pronunciation of teams and players is poor. I understand that it can be difficult pronouncing southern hemisphere names but doesn't anybody listen and check these books? Delm Thomas is not a legendary Welsh international. Delme (pronounced "Dell me") was. There are numerous mistakes of this nature throughout the book and it is so frustrating as it takes you out of the performance and reminds you that Mike Phillips is not narrating the book himself. I really enjoyed listening to Alun Wyn Jones read his own book but was equally disappointed with the reader on Jamie Roberts' autobiography. The publishers should insist that the author read their own work. It just sounds so much better. Both Mike Phillips and Jamie Roberts are regular media personalities and would have done a better job. I would suggest this book is better read to yourself than listening to this recording. Disappointing.
