About this listen

Michael Henchard, drunk at a country fair, sells his wife and baby daughter for five guineas. The following day, in despair and remorse, he forswears alcohol and sets out to redeem himself. In time, he becomes a respected merchant and eventually the mayor of the town. But Fate is not to be so easily appeased, and Henchard finds his past actions resonate through and destroy his plans for the future.

One of the greatest novels in the English language, The Mayor of Casterbridge sees Thomas Hardy at his best, bringing landscape and richly imagined characters to life, and setting the hope of love against the forces of Providence.

A Masterclass in Audiobook narration

Anton Lesser managed to navigate Hardy’s arching sentences without ever losing the sense or the forward motion. I was gripped.

Give that Narrator an Oscar!

The genius of the narrator matched only by that of the author. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Gripping from beginning to end

This is a sublime narration of a superb novel. I adore all the works of Thomas Hardy but I can honestly say that Anton Lesser truly brings every single character off the page and makes them entirely real. You will not regret downloading this work.

One of my favourite Hardy novels

What a story…so much joy so much pain and suffering and sadness. Comical moments too! Lots of twists and turns to the plot. Anton Lesser was the perfect narrator….he could take on the role of so many characters. I highly recommend this version….

Simply a masterpiece...

I have never taken to fiction in book form, especially works of this length or greater, but I found this Audiobook highly accessible and completely captivating. A first class saga, exquisitely written by Thomas Hardy and beautifully and sympathetically told by Anton Lesser. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who is even only half-interested.
