About this listen

One title to change his life...

A disgraced son with a dark reputation, William Ferguson Avenel is content to live in exile in Scotland - until his father dies in the scandal of the Season, making him the new Duke of Rothwell and leaving him in charge of his young sisters. With rumors of insanity swirling around their family, the girls desperately need a chaperone. And he thinks he's found the lady for the job...until Rothwell discovers her dangerous secret life.

One chance to break the rules....

Lady Madeleine Vaillant may be the perfect chaperone, but she can't face her blighted future without making one glorious memory for herself. In disguise on a London stage, she finds all the adoration she never felt from the ton. But when she's nearly recognized, she will do anything to hide her identity - even make a devil's bargain with Rothwell, who saves her from discovery by claiming her as his mistress. She'll take the pleasure he offers - but Madeleine won't lose her heart in the bargain.

One season to fall in love...

Every stolen kiss could lead to discovery, and Rothwell's old enemies are determined to ruin them both. But as their dangerous passion ignites their hearts and threatens their futures, how can an heiress who dreams of freedom deny the duke who demands her love?

Very slow moving unusual story line

Very slow moving with lots of sex scenes, but it does introduce all the main characters in the series, they get to you so you do want to see what happens to them!

Heroine with a double life.

Lady Madeleine appears to be an ageing spinster but her love of acting fills a void in her life. Unfortunately her disguise is penetrated by the Duke of Rothwell, a man with problems of his own.
I enjoyed the story and I thought the narrator did well with her different voices and accents. The only thing that jarred was her pronunciation of ‘ ton’ in the English way rather than the, more usual, French.

Good?

Pretty okay historical romance.
Even though all elements are what I would usually like, it somehow didn't grib me as much as I thought it would.
Absolutely no clue why.

A Pleasant surprise

Despite previous reviews, this title is not bad at all! The storyline is credible and the supporting characters are interesting enough. Give it a chance, especially as it’s a freebie from Audible. If this is your genre, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Book 2 is included at the end to tempt, and it sounds as pleasant as this.

This narrator is great with accents and is convincing.

A lovely story and narration

A good balance of a lovely story line with a saucy romance, narrated beautifully by Emma Powell

An enjoyable listen

This is probably very subjective, but I like the voice donned for Ferguson and was really intrigued by it when (randomly finding and) listening to Book 4 in the series.
Plot is good, but I do agree that it drags at certain moments.

loved the story

Loved every second of the story. Kept me intrigued all the way. Can't say the same about the narrator though. I didn't like her voice for the men especially for Ferguson. But I will definitely continue listening to the whole series. Thank you Audible for the free gift

Too long

Good plot but too drawn out. Spicy in places but not crude. Narrator did well.

A disappointment

Normally I am sucked in by novels that I like but I had to keep revisiting this one. I found it difficult to keep feeling sorry for Madeline when she felt so sorry for herself.
Can I also point out that the ton is pronounced as in hot rather than tun. The narrator read this book with no depth of feeling at all.
