Summary

This play introduces Shakespeare's greatest comedic character, the dissolute knight Sir John Falstaff.

While King Henry's England is threatened by rebellion, the king's scapegrace son Hal haunts the taverns of London, his companions a crew of rogues and thieves let by Falstaff. The earl of Northumberland and his fiery son Hotspur scheme to overthrow the crown. Can Hal be brought to a sense of duty as Prince of Wales? Or will the influence of Falstaff prove too strong? The issue is decided when Hal, Hotspur, and Falstaff come together at the climactic battle of Shrewsbury.

Hal is played by Jamie Glover and King Henry by Julian Glover. Richard Griffiths is Falstaff.

Magnificent

Not a fan of Shakespeare, hated it at school, but decided to give this a try and was amazed and delighted. The story is familiar to all but the way in which the action moves from the high politics of the court to the low places of London is brilliant. And of course there is Falstaff, who is rightly regarded as one of the great characters in all of English literature. Stunning performances by the actors made this a joy for me and I would highly recommend it

The right attitude for the right play! 1st class

Loved it from Start to finish, the cast all played their parts in good Shakespearean fashion, and now for part two.

Ark Angel Shakespeare plays - SUPERB

I do like some of the BBC versions (Eg: Macbeth), but the Ark Angel versions of The Bard's plays are very reliable throughout their series. The actors almost invariably ennunciate fullsomely each ellement of their lines. (Many other production sources have many lines spoken as if trying to get them done and out of the way; like reading a phone directory outloud.) Music is sympathetic to the historical period. Sound effects make good atmosphere without overwhelming the language. Directorial decisions as to interpreting the tone and emotion of each character's lines ring true to the Bard's chosen phrasing and context. And that is the art of a truly good production of Shakespeare. (I have no links to Arkangel etc.)
