About this listen

Love history? Know your stuff with History in an Hour.

King of England, claimant King of France, Lord – and later King – of Ireland, Supreme Head of the Church of England and, perhaps most famously, six times a husband, Henry VIII is England’s most notorious monarch.

Succeeding his father, Henry VII, he allied with the Holy Roman Emperor and began his many obsessive invasions of France. Meanwhile the handsome, worldly king embarked on his famous quests for a suitable wife and heir. With marriage to Anne Boleyn came the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church, Reformation and the Dissolution of the Monasteries. From his childhood to his later years and famed appetites for food, sex and validation, ‘Henry VIII: History in an Hour’ describes the life of a man whose desires and determination changed England and the world.

A basic but informative look at Henry VIII

Covers the main aspects of Henry's life/reign. A lot of focus on the wives but that is to be expected. Still very informative for such a short audiobook. Definitely worth the money.

The introduction and conclusion chapters which briefly look at Henry's psyche could have done with more depth, references and supporting evidence to feel valid enough to include. As it was they feel more like afterthoughts.

Trigger warnings: Torture, violence and death. Mentions of incest and rape.

History in one hour - simply brilliant!

What made the experience of listening to Henry VIII: History in an Hour the most enjoyable?

I'm a lover of history and historical tales, so to have such an important part of British history revisited in just one hour was great.
This would be very useful for those studying the Henry VIII reign, as well as those seeking a refresher or general overview of that period.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Henry VIII: History in an Hour?

As the book is only one hour, i thought it'd be difficult to gain an insight into Henry, but Simon Court manages to vividly describe his character.

Any additional comments?

Simply put, it was a great refresher for me. Instead of now trawling back through historical stories and novels for a reminder/refresher, History in one hour will be where I turn to now.
I can imagine this series serving my children well, as they learn about our history at school.
