Summary
Arved Winter wurde vor kurzem seines Amtes als Pfarrer in einer Trierer Gemeinde enthoben, weil er von der Kanzel herab verkündete, er glaube nicht mehr an Gott. In tiefer Enttäuschung und starken Zweifeln an Gott und der Welt, vor allem aber an seinen Stellvertretern auf Erden, macht er einen Ausflug in die Eifel. Er bemerkt seltsame Aktivitäten, huschende Gestalten, und je später es wird, desto merkwürdiger und unheimlicher wird das Geschehen in den kleinen Dörfern, durch die er fährt. Erst spät begreift er, dass es sich um Vorbereitungen für die nahendeWalpurgisnacht handelt. Das Wetter wird schlechter, und noch in Gewitter und Dunkelheit fährt Winter ziellos umher. Da entdeckt er in einem Waldstück eine Frau, die wild gestikulierend seinen Wagen anhält. Sie ist völlig hysterisch und bittet Winter um Hilfe. Ihr Mann, so berichtet sie, liege mitten im Wald im Sterben.
