Summary

Jack and Michael Whitehall perform their laugh-out-loud autobiography Him & Me as a unique dual-voiced comedy audiobook, filled with ad-libs, asides, and comic dialogue to create a uniquely funny listen.

Jack and Michael open up the rich and plentiful family lore archives on topics such as Jack’s nanny’s enormous feet, Michael’s lifetime touchline ban from Jack’s prep-school and the Whitehall collection of downright weird and eccentric relatives.

With family photographs and sketches by Jack himself, the result is a hugely entertaining insight into a hilarious and sometimes bumpy journey of self-discovery and into the unique relationship between a father and a son. The devotees that adore and worship Jack are already embracing his lovably grumpy father, who is rather enjoying his newfound fame.

Watch out, fans of Reeves & Mortimer, Walliams & Lucas, Morecambe & Wise, there’s a new comedy duo in town. This edition features an extra final chapter, recorded exclusively for Audible listeners.

The most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Would you listen to Him & Me again? Why?

I have already started to re-listen, as I missed some bits as I was laughing so much.

What about Jack Whitehall and Michael Whitehall ’s performance did you like?

I have no doubt that this would be a great book to read, but it is best enjoyed as an audiobook. The real enjoyment comes from the many asides, sighs, occasional spats but overall deep affection between the father and son.

Any additional comments?

I very rarely 'review' books on any sites, but this one is kept me amused for several hours and I received several strange looks as I sat at the traffic lights laughing so hard I was almost crying.

The best book I have listened to this year.

What a unique and refreshing change !

At last, a book that is written and narrated with humour and intelligence. The interplay between Jack and his father is entertaining largely because they are equally matched. Such a refreshing idea to have a memoir told from the perspectives of two generations. I already knew of Jack's comedic abilities from his TV appearances but knew nothing about father, Michael Whitehall - who is a wonderful character with a very droll delivery and a wealth of ancedotes. I hope they will consider writing another book together - and might include chapters from Jack's mother and siblings and even some of the celebrities that Micheal has managed over the years. Nigel Havers.... what a additional treat that would be !

sooooo brilliant

Where does Him & Me rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

jack and his dad read this book brilliantly and it sounds more like they are having a chat and not reading. just great to listen to and had me laughing out loud.

Have you listened to any of Jack Whitehall and Michael Whitehall ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

like the TV show but even funnier

Any additional comments?

I have given it to a friend who I know will ove it as much as i did.

Grieving

I wanted this book to never end. The Whitehalls have been my companions through many a dull day. Tedious household tasks have flown by without me noticing I have done them. Now it is over and I am bereft. The dishwasher remains unloaded, the ironing basket overflows, crumbs litter the worktops. I have tried other comedians books to cure me of this lethargy but it's not the same, I miss them. So Mr and Mr Whitehall please please please write and record another. (And a warning, don't listen to this audio book on a busy train as other commuters will think you a little odd as you start snorting and chuckling uncontrollably to yourself)

Him & Me + You & Them = LOL Listen!

Very cleverly done, with Father & Son not only reading as the authors but quipping with each other throughout - you feel like you're sitting in their Putney living room sharing family stories after dinner! Jack's school tales are in places nothing short of hilarious - fake tan incident being my favourite rewound and replayed several times! Dad is old school and there is something wonderful about the way this collides and with his son's world yet love between them shines through - without, as you would expect, there ever being a 'soppy' moment. Attempts to remedy political incorrectness of varying degrees from both only adds to the humour and serve to demonstrate a secure father & son relationship. Very, very funny, warm and thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended!

You wouldn't expect anything less

Would you consider the audio edition of Him & Me to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version of the book, but I just don't think you'd get the same from the printed version that you do from the audiobook. Their personalities really come across in the audiobook and despite the fact it was probably rehearsed, it feels quite ad libbed in places.

Oh, and there's a bonus bit in the audiobook you don't get in the printed version!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Him & Me?

The nakedness

What about Jack Whitehall and Michael Whitehall ’s performance did you like?

If you didn't know that they were related (well duh!) then you can so tell just from the performance.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I particularly liked the way Michael pretended to know nothing about modern terminology or technology so that it would wind up Jack.

Any additional comments?

Despite Michael's working as an agent for many celebs over the years, I'd never heard of him until this book. Both Jack and Michael were brilliant throughout.

Did not disappoint

A truly inspirational story of a bond between father and son as they go over some of the most memorable and hilarious stories of the parent and child life. You really do get the feeling whilst listening to them tell there stories together with them both interjecting on one another’s chapters, they have such a close relationship and surprised me on what vision I had of a well to do family who had sent their children to boarding school having.

Takes a lot to make me laugh out loud!

I work in a factory so listen to audio books to make the day go faster!
Let me just say this had me in tears, so funny his dad is an absolute legend as well. At first I was like oh I can't stand his posh accent!! But god I got into it straight away!! I had my work mates asking me what's so funny every 10 mins!!

Highly recommend

MARMITE

Any additional comments?

Whilst "Him & Me" is an entertaining "listen", one soon grows weary of Mr. Whitehall senior. He is one of those men who mistakes sarcasm for intelligence and rudeness for wit and his biting nastiness about almost everyone (nannies, neighbours, relatives) begins to grate after a while. I can only imagine what he must be like to live with (Mrs. Whitehall deserves a medal). Add to this his blatant need to convince the listener of how "correct" he is (every anecdote is liberally soaked with "brand names": his shirts, suits, shoes, wines, china, etc.) and he manages to make Michael Winner appear understated. Normally, one would have no cause to refer to this particular aspect, but Jack has made being seen as upmarket his trademark and, as we are bludgeoned with yet another version of "Yes, we really are THAT posh!", it does bear mentioning (they live in Putney, for goodness sake - Putney.) I think it would be fair to say that, after a few hours in their company, it becomes clear that the Whitehalls are to "posh-ness" what Paul Potts is to opera - a relatively good imitation, but far from the real deal. That said, it is obvious that Jack adores his father and their on-air spats (though a tad contrived) are clearly based on a solid relationship between the two men. “Him & Me” is an enjoyable way to pass a few hours and Jack’s light humour is easy enough to digest. His father, however, may prove to be more of an acquired taste.

This is a really enjoyable, laugh a minute listen!

Fabulously witty Whitehall! What more can I say apart from if you love laughing with (at) the Whitehalls then I would highly recommend this audiobook.
