About this listen

Ricardo Torralba and August Morrison don’t agree on much besides the fact that they hate each other. According to Ricardo, August is a spoiled brat who really needs to knock off the sass, once in a while. August insists that Ricardo needs a sense of humor, a good lay, or a well-placed bullet. Maybe all three.

Fortunately, the assassin’s profession is a solitary one, and they can go about their lives without getting in each other’s way.

Usually.

When a contracted hit turns out to be a setup for both of them, they narrowly escape with their lives. Now, even if they don’t like it (spoiler: They don’t), August and Ricardo have to work together if they want a shot at survival.

In between firefights and questionable interrogation methods as they hunt down their would-be killer, the cranky assassins discover that under all that mutual loathing is a spark of chemistry they can’t ignore. They want to ignore it, they probably should ignore it, but August can’t help flirting to annoy Ricardo, and Ricardo can think of at least one way to shut him up for a while.

But they need to focus, damn it, and figure out who’s gunning for them and why. Assuming they don’t kill each other first.

Hitman vs Hitman is a stand-alone, gay romantic suspense featuring two men who’d rather chew glass than fall for each other, a whole lot of inappropriate comments, and some buttons that will need resewing.

Fun

This book caught my eye as I was trawling through Michael Ferraiuolo's titles. It was also recommended to me as an enjoyable listen.

A hitman book? Narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo? It's difficult not to draw comparisons to Alice Winters' exceptional Hitman series. There's even a person in Ricardo's past known as the Sandman! Though, actually, Ricardo and August remind me of a different Winters pair: Claude and Alexei from How to Lure a Hunter VRC: Vampire Related Crimes, Book 3.

I like both Ricardo and August. They have contrasting characters that go well together. They have some top drawer banter and wonderful chemistry, with each having a good heart and their own vulnerabilities. It's probably a bit weird to think hitmen are adorable, but never mind.

It takes a long time for there to be any romantic element in the book. I'm not sure I would even call it romance, but I enjoy that 'actions speak louder than words' kind of book. Saving your beloved from being murdered is definitely more romantic than hearts and flowers. Unless you're presenting the cold dead heart of your enemy to your beloved... Hmm... Anyway, I enjoyed the closeness that develops between these two and the level of understanding and acceptance they have for each other.

The story is good. It is fast paced and interesting, lots of guns and other weapons. It had the potential to be more exciting and unexpected, and less predictable. I would have enjoyed a huge plot twist thrown in somewhere. I would say that the book is humorous - not laugh out loud funny - but enough to keep you engaged and entertained.

I understand that this book was intended as a standalone, but I - and a lot of other people it seems - think that there is the potential for more from this pair. A second book, Sniper vs Spotter (Hitman vs Hitman Book 2) is due out next month, and I'm looking forward to it. I believe the authors have said that's definitely the end of it. I guess we'll see....

Michael Ferraiuolo is outstanding as always. I say this all the time: his voice is pure magic. There's nothing like putting on a Michael Ferraiuolo when you're having a bad day. As soon as I hear his voice I can feel myself physically start to relax and smile. As always his characterisations are distinct and consistent, his pacing and comic timing exemplary. He also composed original music for this book, and I always love it when a book has a bit of music to set the tone. I cannot say enough great things about Michael's work.

Enjoyable..

I found it to be an OK listen, the storyline was good but I probably won't listen to it again.
I struggled with the narrator a bit and found Ricardo's accent off putting at times.

Fun and exciting

This book was so much fun! I loved listening to it, Michael's narration was simply amazing! Ricardo and August had perfect chemistry, and I loved their small battles with words. The story was average, but the hitman vs hitman situation totally gave it a highlight. I honestly recommend this book to everybody who wants something similar like Alice Winter's books or just need some laugh and action packed really well.

Amazing

So so funny but should come with a warning not to listen when your migraine hasn’t quite gone away , because laughing so hard makes it feel like your head is exploding .

Disappointing

Nowhere in the blurb did it say this book was a lampoon of the hitman genre or I wouldn't have selected it. As both the MCs are buffoons, there was little contrast in their characters, made confusing by having one narrator voice both. Even the top narrator couldn't lift this book. I've had so may good strong thrillers by these authors with excellent characterizations, but this one was unlistenable after the first 30 mins of trite nonsense. Thank god you can return Audiobooks.
