About this listen

Marianne Morea's debut young adult release! Two hundred years of secrets and lies are bleeding into the present, and high school seniors, Hunter Morrissey and Rowen Corbett, find themselves linked with unseen forces shrouded in mystery and violence in the quaint river town of Sleepy Hollow...but the dark water of the Hudson River is not the only blackness looming in the distance. Truths, buried and long forgotten, have risen at a time when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Only Hunter and Rowen hold the key to locking the past in the past, and setting old wrongs to right. Can justice be served? Can the two find a way to straddle both worlds and solve the mystery when they don't understand the clues? Inspired by historical events that surround the village of Sleepy Hollow and the famous legend that shares its name, this young adult romance takes you on a journey full of history and suspense with a splash of horror and the paranormal.

Incredible story that had me hooked from the start

The backdrop is Sleep Hollow. It's not a re-write of the story, there's plenty of history but it's a unique book. Saying that anyone who is interested in that area of the world will love the book. The horror elements are more thriller than gore and are great. I love the story in general. What is even better than the story though is the characters and the relationships between them. We are eased into all of the other characters through the very likable Rowen. She's nice, although she has her moments, which is nice because it means she's not one dimensional. I love the relationship between her and her mother, and grandmother. Her up and down relationships with her friends and peers is also really well done. Hunter is a great character. I like the glimpse of his past which shows why even though he is the all-american boy that all the girls want he is still a nice grounded guy. I also like how normalised the story makes witches/witchcraft. There's no over-playing what they can do, they can just do it. It's also not used too much. I've read books that use it to seal up plot holes but this is a part of the story without the need to throw it at us.

I loved this from start to finish. It had pace but also felt really relaxing to listen too.

In terms of the narration. Absolutely brilliant!! Great voices for the different characters, especially Rowen. Also a great voice for the general narration. A good sense of pace to the narration that matches the sense of urgency or appropriate situation that the story is in.
