Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Excellent story, okay narrator
What a gripping tale about drow society and the man himself, Drizzt. A great story from start to finish. The complex names really threw me off to begin with and I was genuinely concerned that I would not be able to follow the story, but it all works itself out as the tale progresses.
The narrator does an okay job of reading the story, he has a deep sullen voice, but he can been a little monotonous and struggles to give different characters a unique voice.

A great book and an excellent true telling
This book came after the Crystal Shard and I remember as a young man approaching the prequel trilogy with apprehension... I'm glad I picked up the book then and I'm glad I started my audible adventure with Homeland. An excellent starting point to the story and characters that I have come to love over the years.
Victor Bevine masterfully navigates the voice delivery in such a way that you soon accept that this is how they always sounded. Instead of detracting, he manages where so many other narrators fail... he adds to the flavour, the ingredients of the book become that much, if not sweeter, then balanced.
I took out a years subscription and got the first 6 books; I guess audible has a lot to thank both Mr. Salvatore and victor Bevine alike!.
Highly recommended

Origins of a legendary tabletop gaming character
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. Many of my friends know my love of fiction and gaming, particularly the imagination and fun of pen-and-paper role-playing games like D&D. Anyone familiar with D&D knows of Drizzt from Menzoberranzan, the franchise's legendary dark elf. Salvatore, through Bevine's excellent performance, brings this two-dimensional icon to life. What's not to like?
What did you like best about this story?
Adding this dimension to a much-admired gaming legend allows the reader to experience the Forgotten Realms brought to life, through the early years of one of its most memorable characters. Bevine's performance adds the right amount of suspense, darkness, elation and trepidation.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The cat. (Trying to avoid spoilers).
Any additional comments?
I particularly like this series for the reasons mentioned above, but standing alone from their D&D background I believe they make an interesting fantasy story. No prior knowledge of polyhedral dice or character sheets is required. The story stands on its own merits.

Awful 'narrator'
I have read most of the Drizzt books and was looking forward to listening to them instead. However I was very disappointed in the narrator, who just droned the book out, with nothing really to define one character from another by voice. I will be returning the books asap. Salvatore should get these books re narrated by a decent narrator.

I guess you either love it or hate and I hated it
I suspect you need to like dungeons and dragons or whatever game Drizzt came from to appreciate the book.
Unfortunately I don't know anything about D&D so the story fell flat for me. I didn't like a single character in the book including Drizzt, for a time I thought I would like Drizzt's father but no I ended up being disappointed in him too.
The plotlines seemed overly long and tedious and in the end I skipped to the end to see what happened and it all unravelled pretty much as expected but I just couldn't bring myself to care. I think the underlying premise could have made a good story but for some reason I couldn't get into it. I guess nearly 11 hours without a single smile or laugh can be a bit mind numbing in the end.
My suggestion would be give it a go as lots of people seem to love the stories. But make sure you listen before the year is up so you can return it if you don't like it. Not like me who kept putting it off and then when I did listen to it, it was too late to return and I am stuck with the trilogy as I got them all in a deal - Ooops :(

Slow going at times but not bad
I was eager to start this series of books and perhaps was expecting a little too much from the first book. This first book is heavily laden with the protagonists back story from birth to self discovery.
Although there is plenty of interesting parts I found it hard to ease through the story until it got to pivotal moments.
Being a d&d fan and player I was familiar with the character and setting but felt it was heavily laden with details I wasn't interested in.
On the whole a good opening book to an intriguing protagonist arc and I look towards the next in the series "exile"

Lives up to the hype
If you've ever wondered why older DM's give an exasperated sigh whenever someone rolls a Drow ranger/fighter that dual wields it's because everyone who read this book wanted to play as Drizzt, or at least something similar., and with good reason. this book gives insight into the underdark, Drow, society and why good people don't last long there.

Among the drow, all trust is foolish.
Drizzt is, by far, the most iconic drow character in fantasy literature. He's so popular that within the circles of roleplaying gamers, both tabletop and computer, it's a common joke that every drow is a two-sword wielding goodie goodie, despite their race's fierce reputation. Players will name their characters in an homage to Drizzt, just as they might with Legolas or Gandalf. That's some high praise, right there.
Homeland is the first book of the Dark Elf Trilogy and the (truly massive) Legend of Drizzt Saga. While it's not the first appearance of Drizzt, it's the place for new readers to start, because here you'll learn of both his origins and his background. Homeland describes the City of Menzoberranzan, home of the drow, and the struggles for power that take place there.
If you've never read a book about the drow, you'll quickly find that there's a lot to learn here. Salvatore assumes that the reader is unfamiliar with his setting, and he exposes the reader to the atrocities committed in the name of drow culture through the eyes of the naive and innocent Drizzt. By the end of the book, you will have a good feel for what the drow are all about, and likely be hungry for more of their plots and intrigue.
The story features many interesting characters: the insidious matron Malice, the vengeful Alton Devir, the noble Zaknafein. Drizzt is the primary hero, but to be perfectly honest, I found his character arc the weakest in the book. His naïveté and indomitable innocence are meant to be his best qualities, but I felt robbed of the potential for a redemption story that could have made him much more interesting. Surrounded by characters who are falling into ruin through their own actions or finding spiritual redemption for their crimes, Drizzt's transition from naive to slightly-less-naive doesn't feel very spectacular. This is, however, a matter of taste. The tone of this novel really sets up the heroic tone the larger series is known for.
As for the delivery, Bevine does an admirable job. I have quibbles on pronunciation, here and there, but since all of these words were born on paper, there probably is no solid agreement on any of them. Bevine does a good job of transitioning between the harsh calculating characters like Matron Malice and the more idealistic Drizzt, which is rather impressive.
Ultimately, if you are interested in learning more about the drow or getting into the Drizzt series of novels, this is a great place to start. The intrigue and plots are interesting, but there's enough action to keep you interested if that's more your speed.

Well met old friend!
Salvatore can barely be called competent as a writer (at the time he wrote this book), but he doesn't need to be. Some people want masterpieces, others want entertainment, this book deliver plenty of entertainment.
Drizzt and I "met" when I was entering my teen years, and listening to Drizzt's adventures made my life that much richer. When I first heard the audiobooks, the recordings was a cassette-rip that was unbearably bad. This re-recording gives me the opportunity to pay for me enjoying the adventures of Drizzt, but also one that sounds great.
I can recommend this book (and it's sequels) to anyone who like some great entertainment wile taking the bus or jogging. It's easy to follow, narrated excellently and gives anyone between 10 and 100 a magical world to be carried away to, from the mundanity of everyday life.

Excellent Series!
I have just fallen in love with Drizzt. He is such an excellent character. There are so many books about Drizzt that it took me a while to find the beginning of the series; however, this is it. You have reached the beginning story. I especially love Drizzt's commentaries on life. Pretty sensitive, for a Drow! lol
If you are looking for a good fantasy series, with Elves, Dwarves, Humans, and all kinds of fantasy creatures, all wielding Magic, and with lots of action, you just can't go wrong with this series. It is the Motherlode. R A Salvatore has created so many excellent books about Drizzt and his companions that it is like an banquet. Victor Bevine does an excellent job of narrating, too. He brings the characters to life for me.

If you are new to this book series, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK FIRST. START THE SERIES WITH BOOKS 4,5,6 AND THEN 1,2,3. Books 4-6 are the originally written, with 1-3 going back and telling about Drizzt's birth, early years, training, and his eventual leaving of Menzoberanzan.
This book ( as well as books 2 and 3) are different than books 4-6. They are less traditional fantasy and more 'How is he going to survive this crazy murder cult'. Another big difference is that none of the other major characters from book 4-6 are present in this series, but Salvatore does an excellent job crafting new characters for Drizzt to befriend and fight with who are just as interesting as the ones who came before.

Horrible
This isn't a 'story', it written more like the technical telling of an account of what happened. Half an hour into this and I was already thinking about returning it. I gave it another hour and it's no better. Boring writing, flat narration, dull story. This thing is horrible.
I can't comprehend how so many people gave this such good reviews. It's a horrible book.
Returning it.

Pretty good
If you could sum up Homeland in three words, what would they be?
Grows on you
What did you like best about this story?
It took a bit to get all the background of the story but it is a series and as the story goes on, it gets better and better. It is dark and cruel but our hero emerges and there is hope.
Which scene was your favorite?
I think when Zack and Drizzt's last 'fight'. They come to the knowledge of what they are to each other and it is touching.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, when Drizzt and his cat leave, they leave as friends together. Doesn't sound like much, but in their world, friendship and loyalty to one another is unheard of.
Any additional comments?
I actually listened to this a couple of times before I really got into the story but am glad I took the time. I will continue the series.

Fantatic Entry into Audible Fantasy for me!
Would you listen to Homeland again? Why?
In a few years when the material isn't so fresh in my mind, absolutely!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Drizzt, he's a character out of his own culture and a powerful fighter. He's a character everyone would want to be like.
What about Victor Bevine’s performance did you like?
Different convincing voices for each character.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was just a fun listen from start to finish.
Any additional comments?
I've been listening to a lot of Sci-fi because thats my scene. However, the first novel I ever read cover to cover was written by R.A. Salvatore and it was riveting to me as a teen and I could barely put it down. I remembered the author when I seen this book on a friends shelf and thought I need to see if Audible has that title. This is the origin story of a very fun character and it is a very fun great read I'm excited to read the rest in this series and to follow the adventures of Drizzt Do'Urden.

A 'Must Have' For Any Audible Fantasy Library!
I'm noticing that the more I love an author's work, the longer the review.
So, strap in. And be warned. This will NOT be short. This work deserves a detailed review. You deserve more than a cursory review on this series.
Keep in mind that I read this series many, many years ago, and began writing this review in the hopes that once I listened to it as soon as it hit my library, it would be a positive work. And it is. I'm glad, because I also was ready to give it a scathing review if poorly produced.
Let's begin.
First a bit of background on the author. I've thoroughly enjoyed R.A. Savaltore's fantasy writing for many years, and consider a fair portion of his writing (and listening) to be essential additions to any Audible listener's library. Granted, no author's entire body of work is perfect, and Salvatore' is definitely NOT an exception to this tried and true literary rule. Some of his earlier work reflects an author still finding his way, and is uninspired and drifting. However, when he penned the Drizzt origin trilogy, he moved into a more masterful and inspired writing direction, creating dynamic and page-turning writing enjoyed by fantasy readers and listeners around the world.
Today, Salvatore is, essentially, a stand-apart Wordsmith among the myriad of fantasy authors to whom you've listened. Anyone who's read his DemonWars Saga, his Forgotten Realms, and Star Wars novels understands why I appreciate what this fantastic author brings to the literary table.
So, on to this first in the Drizzt origin trilogy.
Why is this series so important, and therefore, such an essential fantasy addition to your Audible library?
Salvatore's trilogy has some of the most engaging fantasy writing you'll quite possibly read. His sweeping and vivid descriptions of Menzoberranzan, the cavernous underdark kingdom of the drow elves, the intricate machiavellian backstabbing plots between the drow ruling houses, and even within Drizzt's own horribly dysfunctional family, and the spot on engaging storyline were well received by the public. The trilogy eventually launched numerous sequels and novels by Salvatore and other enjoyable novels in the crow universe by equally inspired authors (See my Audible Spider Queen series review, and expect my Icewind Dale review in the future!). This fantastic body of work has made a HUGE impact on modern epic fantasy, and it raised the bar on what we could, and SHOULD, expect from good fantasy writing.
And in this case, our very valuable Audible credits.
As usual, I do NOT provide spoilers, nor plot giveaways in review. Again, the journey, ESPECIALLY in this series, has its own voyage of discovery that simply must be experienced firsthand. I'm confident that some of you will will mark this review as not helpful for this reason. So be it. I will not spoil this fantastic journey for the rest of you. There is so much to the drow novels, that you are going to by busy, and pleasantly so. Here's one SMALL example. Here's a list of the MAJOR drow houses, and all play a part in these fantastic novels:
The MAJOR houses of Menzoberranzan, in order of dominance (There ARE others):
1.Baenre
2. Barrison Del'Armgo
3. Oblodra (challenged by another house in another novel)
4. DeVir (challenged by another house in this novel)
5. Hun'ett (challenged by another house in another novel)
6. Faen Tlabbar
7. Xorlarrin
8. Agrach Dyrr (challenged by another house in another novel)
9. Mizzrym
10. Do'Urden (later challenged by another house in another novel)
11. Fey-Branche
12. Tuin'Tarl
13. Duskryn
14. Srune'Lett
15. Horlbar
16. Kenafin
17. Druu'giir
18. Hunzrin
19. Shobalar
20. Vandree
21. Symryvvin
I challenge you - Go look on the web for the astounding collection of information and lore on the lore of these novels. It's rich. It's daunting. It's exhausting. it's consuming.
It's fantastic.
Now, on to Salvatore's writing style. He's not an Erikson or Moorcock. Those artists take their time in descriptive writing that requires strong focus to be enjoyed. Salvatore's style is more like the lovechild of Brooks and Chalker - Down to earth, a bit more to the point, yet vividly descriptive. I found myself getting wonderfully lost inside this trilogy, and I'm betting you will too.
Keep in mind that years ago, there was an earlier audiobook of this trilogy. It was intolerable, due to the unpleasant narration - It truly ruined the effort. I stayed up late to download this audiobook, and begin my listening. Here, the narrator is much better, and doesn't impede the author's work. Nicely done, and a wonderful improvement, Mr. Bevine!
So, be warned, dear Audible listener. You're going to be spoiled by this work, and you're going to demand equally good listening of your fantasy authors.
You'll also want to get the other two audiobooks in this fantastic series, and want the rest of the drow audiobooks here at Audible.
Finally, a tremendous "Thank you!" To R. A. Salvatore.
I'm still enjoying your journey after all these years.

To many names to follow on Audible while driving.
To many names to follow on Audible while driving. In print where the brain registers an image for the names it might be an alright book but not behind the steering wheel.

surprisingly great!
If you could sum up Homeland in three words, what would they be?
Starts out slow, but I really got involved with the characters and underlining stories
What other book might you compare Homeland to and why?
Lord of the rings
