Summary

Learning is a lifelong adventure.

It starts in your mother's womb, accelerates to high speed in infancy and childhood, and continues through every age. Whether you're actively engaged in mastering a new skill, intuitively discovering an unfamiliar place, or even sleeping - which is fundamental to helping you consolidate and hold on to what you've learned - you are truly born to learn around the clock. But few of us know how we learn, which is the key to learning and studying more effectively.

This series of 24 vibrant and accessible lectures has been designed to change that. Designed by an award-winning psychology teacher and expert on how people of all ages master new skills and information, it sheds light on what's going on when we learn and dispels common myths about the subject.

Professor Pasupathi's many examples cover the modern history of research on learning, from behaviorist theory in the early 20th century to the most recent debates about whether IQ can be separated from achievement - and even whether a spectrum of different learning styles and multiple intelligences really exists.

The lectures are also a rich source of readily implemented tips on how to excel in many different learning situations, including mastering difficult material, motivating children to learn, and preserving learning aptitude as we grow older.

annoying filler word

it is very annoying to listen to a lecture sprinkled with a filler word 'Now'. she starts nearly every second passage with it.
couldn't finish listening because of that.

Great early part of the book but not the end

Really enjoyable and informative book in the first 8 - 10 lectures but then it began to lose my interest.
The later chapters became loaded with technical terms which did not seem to match the content being explained. Also it became very parochial or local in terms of subject, academia examples and just became less pragmatic and relevant to me as an amateur enthusiast of the subject. It felt like it lacked examples outside of the lab or theory.
Nonetheless I am glad I bought the book and may return to it again.
I would recommend the book but probably not for a general read.

Absolutely brilliant- engaging, interesting & applicable

I loved the structure, the content, and the pace of these lectures. The lecturer’s engaging voice, examples, themes and messages took me on a thoroughly enjoyable journey. I learned a lot. This information will help me in so many different practical ways… such as to stick with the learning especially when the output is terrible, to keep going with my studying a degree as a mature student despite it being incredibly effortful and hard work, encouraging me to empower otters to keep going with their learning, and a reminder to keep learning new skills throughout my lifetime.

Thank you Monisha

Excellent course on lifelong learning!

I thoroughly enjoyed this enlightening and thought-provoking course! My background is in teaching students of all ages and backgrounds so found this material a great way to refresh my own knowledge and bring myself up to date with advances in learning techniques and strategies.

Each lesson was presented succinctly, logically and clearly and I would recommend this to parents, students and teachers alike as we are all equally responsible for creating a good environment for our children to learn and do well in their studies and non-academic subjects.

One of the key messages I took away from this, and something I do advocate is "You are never too old to learn something new!"

great for scientist minds

the lectures are mostly a long list of experiments, contemplations on their results, and some interesting suggestions here and there.
for an inquisitive mind, that needs data as well as thought, this is great.
people who want to be told how to learn better, are looking in the wrong place.
I really liked the format and the super interesting content. it really goes over a lot of stuff in learning theory.
the lecturer is mostly ok, engaging and positive. but, a bit slow for me. also, there are a lot of pauses in the audio - complete silent seconds. as in a second here, a second there. I found this very annoying, and it makes the experience not so good.
BUT! I solved both my problems by listening to lectures at 1.25 speed (as I do for most Great Courses products anyway).
And I already feel like I could listen to this again.

Excellent

As someone who lectured on cognitive psychology at university I highly recommend this course; both for students thinking of going to college, and to the general public who will benefit from learning something which might make them think a bit more.

Good Overview

A difficult and challenging topic well covered and wide range of opinions. For those who are seeking an overview this is very useful. If you are looking for a specific learning need, then search for that.

Narrators intonation distracting

Was looking forward to this but for me the narrators delivery was distracting , found I was spending too much attention on listening overly deliberately to comprehend some of words and consequently I felt out of sync, with the flow Not able to accurately review content cos decided to return it.
