Summary

Following the success of his best-selling book How to Pray, Pete Greig turns his attention to one of the most pressing and perplexing questions of our time: how to hear God.

Nothing could possibly matter more than learning to discern the authentic voice of God, but few things in life are more susceptible to delusion, deception and downright abuse. When life falls apart and we need God's comfort; in moments of cultural turmoil when we need God's clarity; facing formidable decisions when we need God's guidance; desiring a deeper faith when we need God to say something, anything, to turn the monologue we call prayer into a genuine conversation.

Having addressed God's silence in God on Mute and then How to Pray in his previous best seller, Pete Greig is back to bring wisdom and guidance to one of the most pressing and perplexing aspects of universal Christian experience - how to hear God. Exploring the story of Christ's playful, poignant conversation on the road to Emmaus, Pete draws deeply from the insights of a wide range of Christian traditions. He weaves together the evangelical emphasis upon hearing God in the Bible and the charismatic commitment to hearing God in the prophetic, with the contemplative understanding of God's 'still, small voice' within.

Heartfelt, accessible, inspiring, encouraging

A really down to earth, helpful read with lots of practical tips along the way. I loved the way the style was like having a cuppie & a chat with Pete. Made it really easy to listen to and yet covering some weighty subjects.

Excellent.

This book is excellent. I love how it is based on biblical truths and it spoke to me in a way that avoided confusion and inspired action. The audible version was great but I’m going to go back to the book to take my time with the response suggestions. Will try and get a group together and do this. So good. Thank you, Pete

Really practical guide for Christians (and maybe people without a faith)

A helpful and engaging practical guide for Christians (and maybe also people who don’t yet have a faith) who aren’t used to listening for the voice of God but want to know how. Pete reassuringly links all of his thoughts and ideas back to references in the Bible. Pete occasionally reads quotes in accents which, by his own admission, are a bit ropey, but I mostly found this charming and his overall reading of the book feels like he’s speaking the words in conversation, not just reading the words off a page. I gave 5* for ‘story’ because, even though it’s not exactly a story, there are real life stories within the book.

Worth it for the accents alone

Simple, profound, accessible and challenging, this book unravels the mysteries of hearing God in the everyday and the day-to-day of 21st century life.

The author is a gifted writer and talented narrator and hearing him read his own work feels like the voice of a friend drawing close, supporting, guiding and opening up the wonders of real relationship with God.

A fantastic follow up to 'How to Pray'. Thoroughly recommended.
