Summary

The story continues in the 10th volume of Hiccup's How to Train Your Dragon memoirs read by David Tennant. When we last left Hiccup things were getting very dark indeed. The Dragon Rebellion has begun. Snotlout is the new Chief of the Hooligan Tribe. Stoick has been banished and given the Slavemark. And Alvin the Treacherous has eight of the King's Lost Things, and has been proclaimed the new King of the Wilderwest ... But what can Hiccup do, now all alone and in exile, hunted by both humans and dragons? Can he find the Dragon Jewel, mankind's last and only hope? And if he does, what will he do with it?

How to Train Your Dragon is a DreamWorks film starring Gerrard Butler, America Ferrera, and Jonah Hill, out on DVD. Listen to the rest of Hiccup's exploits in How to Train Your Dragon, How to Be a Pirate, How to Speak Dragonese, How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse, How to Twist a Dragon's Tale, A Hero's Guide to Deadly Dragons, How to Ride a Dragon's Storm, How to Break a Dragon's Heart and How to Steal a Dragon's Sword.

Critic reviews

Praise for the How to Train your Dragon books: "Fiercely exciting and laugh-aloud funny, it is as full of joy for children of 7+ who have given up reading as for those who love it." (Amanda Craig, The Times)
"Children's book of the week: This book is great fun and has a Blackadderish sense of humour ... full of the sort of jokes that will make schoolboys snigger." (Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times)
"... raucous and slapstick ... liberally illustrated with [Cressida Cowell's] riotous drawings, notes and maps." ( The Financial Times)
"[Cressida Cowell] puts a contemporary spin on the old brains over brawn moral and brings the story to a climax with a thrilling dragon duel. Lots for lots of different readers to enjoy." ( Books for Keeps)

A maturing story

Would you consider the audio edition of How to Seize a Dragon's Jewel to be better than the print version?

Listening to David Tennant brings the story alive in a way I never manage when reading the paper version to my children at bedtime so yes.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hiccup, all of the dragons, camicazi and Fishlegs. They are gawky, funny kind, loyal and brave.

What about David Tennant’s performance did you like?

All of it.

How to seize a Dragons Jewel

Another amazing instalment in the How to Train Your Dragon series!
Narrated by the fabulous David Tennant!
The story is drawing to a close and things are getting very dicey in the Barbaric Archipelago.

These stories are great to listen to in the car with the children or (as in my case) in the kitchen while cooking!
I love them and can't wait for the final book!

Absolutely superb!

absolutely fantastic

One of the best books out of the series , one story following up from the other.the stories are absolutely addictive and the stories just get better and better. I couldn't wait to get the audio, once I got it I couldn't go to sleep because it kept me awake because the story is so gripping, so I would recommend that you wont let your 10 year old listened to it at bedtime, because she/he won't go to sleep for hours!

Another CRACKER!

What made the experience of listening to How to Seize a Dragon's Jewel the most enjoyable?

This is another excellent book in the How to train your dragon series. Superbly brought to life by David Tennant and the wonderful accents he gives to the tribes.
Slightly darker than previous books, everything is most definitely against Hiccup and you are made aware of the loneliness and despair he feels but at the same time there'd is a wonderful humour and you know Hiccup and his friends will muddle through.

What other book might you compare How to Seize a Dragon's Jewel to, and why?

These books have proved to be popular not just with my 9 year old son whom I purchased both the book and audible book for but his 12 year old sister and 15 year old brother. Wonderful peaceful car journeys.

Which character – as performed by David Tennant – was your favourite?

I am particularly fond of David Tennants characterisation of Camicazi, but my son loves Gobber the Belch - David Tennant brings an extra dimension to an already wonderful book.

Any additional comments?

Whilst you can read this book as a stand alone novel, I heartily recommend starting at the beginning of the series and working your way through to get the most out of the characters portrayed.
Most definitely money well spent

Funny, moving, exciting, tale of a becoming a hero

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The ongoing saga of Hiccup moves onto darker territory. There are moments of peril, upset, heartbreak and suspense. These are balanced by funny, uplifting and moving events that make you punch the air and cheer Hiccup on. David Tennant is simply superb in his characterisations and each key player stands out with a well defined personality. The story moves on as Hiccup continues on the hard way to becoming a hero...

Who was your favorite character and why?

Camicazi is so full of energy and her faith in Hiccup never wavers in this book.

Which character – as performed by David Tennant – was your favourite?

Gobber the belch

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The Fishlegs bits (no spoilers!)

Any additional comments?

Hurry and narrate the next book David!

Kinda spoiler alert!

Wow! This series just gets better and better. There are so many valuable lessons hidden in these stories, but for me, the most important lesson from this book is learning to have courage in the face of failure, fear and doubt. It’s about learning that failures do not define one!

Well done to the author and narrator!!!!
