Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

As young boys, both Jacques Rebière and Thomas Midwinter become fascinated with trying to understand the human mind. As psychiatrists, their quest takes them from the squalor of the Victorian lunatic asylum to the crowded lecture halls of the renowned Professor Charcot in Paris; from the heights of the Sierra Madre in California to the plains of unexplored Africa.

As the concerns of the old century fade and the First World War divides Europe, the two men's volatile relationship develops and changes, but is always tempered by one exceptional woman, Thomas' sister Sonia.

Moving and challenging in equal measure, Human Traces explores the question of what kind of beings men and women really are.

Absolute Brilliant

I have so enjoyed this book. Stunning work from Sebastian and the narration made it very real.

Enthralling, brilliant and thought-provoking

I totally enjoyed this book, and SF gives us so much food for thought about what it is to be human and about the co-evolution of self awareness and predisposition to mental health problems, and yet all inside a fascinating engaging story. Brilliant job!

Spoiled by narration

Enjoyable book. I find the narration style irritating like the reader is slightly drunk speeding and slowing and eating the words

Great story, shame about the narrator

I love Faulks and I love audio books but this version is awful, garbled passages of narration has spoilt this book for me, I will get the book out of my library to finish it off. Narrators should not drink whisky whilst narrating.

Painfully slow start

A dreary beginning. Followed by a pretty awful, embarrassing account of the romance of Sonia and Jack! I’m hoping that things will improve.

The enquiring minds

Written with sensitivity. Two men showing a relentless determination to strive for answers and the closeness of their relationship.

The readers capacity to make the novel breathe

Beautifully written - astounding psychological and historical research and a compelling narrative - that you can easily switch from a dawning psychoanalytical approach - to neurology - to darwinism- fantastic ! .

Another promising story spoiled by narrator.

I'm two chapters in, but although I'm finding the story compelling, I just can't endure the narrator and will have to return this one and wait to read a paper copy. Sounds like he's drunk and having a competition with himself to see how many words he can get out with one breath, speeding up and slowing down in spurts.

a long listen

I didn't enjoy this as much as other books by the author as it was quite intense at times and meandered from plotline to plotline. It took me a while to get through to be honest. However it is a well written and expertly narrated story
