Summary

WINNER OF THE FORTNUM & MASON DEBUT FOOD BOOK AWARD 2021
WINNER OF 2021 LAKELAND BOOK OF THE YEAR

From Frazzles to Foie Gras: a memoir of wanting more.

From an early age, Grace Dent was hungry. As a little girl growing up in Currock, Carlisle, she yearned to be something bigger, to go somewhere better.

Hungry traces Grace’s story from growing up eating beige food to becoming one of the much-loved voices on the British food scene. It’s also everyone’s story—from treats with your nan, to cheese and pineapple hedgehogs, to the exquisite joy of cheaply made apple crumble with custard. It’s the high-point of a chip butty covered in vinegar and too much salt in the school canteen, on an otherwise grey day of double-Maths and cross country running. It’s the real story of how we have all lived, laughed and eaten over the past 40 years.

Warm, funny and joyous, Hungry is also about love and loss, the central role that food plays in all our lives, and how a Cadbury’s Fruit ‘n’ Nut in a hospital vending machine can brighten the toughest situation.

brilliantly written and regaled

I normally find it harder to get into audiobooks but Graces voice, both literally and figuratively, is gripping. The structure of the story really keeps the pace going and she balances entertainment and emotion brilliantly. one of my favourite books of the year so far and I usually prefer fiction. definitely up there with one of the best memoirs too, just beautiful.

Fabulous!

What a fabulous book that hit every emotion. I loved the description of all the food from the food that I remember as a child to the high end restaurant. But what stands out is Grace Dent’s descriptions and memories of her family, particularly of her father and his battle with dementia. The book is made so personal as it is read by Grace Dent.

So Much More Than Food

I loved this, listened in three sittings. Beautifully written, funny, touching, honest, open. A reflection on childhood, class, memory, family and growing up in the 1970s and 80s. Lots of touchstones for me from the food, music references and those early days at Uni. I think we must be similar ages which I think helps with the resonance of some of the cultural/pop culture references. Well worth the download.

Remembering Food

This is a story about memory and food. To some extent it is a story about Grace Dent’s life but that would make it sound too dry. It’s richer than that - with gravy, findus crispy pancakes and Cadbury’s fruit and nut. I didn’t grow up in Currock but my life was influenced by the same food - I recognised our commonalities.
The Cumbrian -scouse lilt of Ms Dent’s voice brought the narration alive.
I became quickly invested in , not only the food, but also the story. Excellently told.
I was also in Penrith Sainsbury’s on Christmas Eve 2018. Who knew?
