Summary

From the international number one best-selling author of the DCI Ryan mysteries.

Hysteria is the second instalment in Ross' brand-new Dr Alex Gregory series, narrated by actor Hugh Dancy.

Recently returned from his last case in Ireland, elite forensic psychologist and criminal profiler Dr Alexander Gregory receives a call from the French police that he can’t ignore. It’s Paris fashion week, and some of the world’s most beautiful women are turning up dead, their faces slashed in a series of frenzied attacks while the world’s press looks on.

Amidst the carnage, one victim has survived, but she’s too traumatised to talk. Without her help, the police are powerless to stop the killer before he strikes again - can Gregory unlock the secrets of her mind before it’s too late? Murder and mystery are peppered with dark humour in this fast-paced thriller set in a spectacular Parisian landscape.

Bit disappointed

I was so looking forward to this second book in L J Ross’s new series about Dr Alexander Gregory but I’m afraid to say that it just didn’t grip me. Fairly early in the book I guessed what might have happened (I won’t go into detail because of spoilers). I didn’t guess the whole of it but was right on three or four points. Hugh Dancy is an excellent narrator, his French accent is really good but I found myself zoning out and having to recap having lost track of the storyline. I will try the next one which I believe is due out in February but hope that DCI Ryan will be back with his team in a new, full length book. I’m afraid Dr Gregory is coming in second best for me. Sorry !

Brilliant

I believe this to be the best of all his books I have read so far. A complex story based around a profiler with a great talent for his work. The author shows a great understanding for the complexities of the mind .

Good until the final 90 minuts

It was a five star listen for most of the novel with clearly defined characters and a good story that kept me listening. However, the explanation as who who had perpetrated one of the crimes is too contrived and clinically implausible. Pity as I'd enjoyed the first book featuring Alexander Gergory and thought it would be a series to follow.
The narrator is excellent

Great story once I got into it.

Probably because I am hooked on the DI Ryan series, I struggled to identify with the characters initially. Once I got the hang of it I was away! Already have the next in the series ready for tomorrow night.

Very good story

It was a brilliant story and well read. It kept me thinking all the way through right to the end. Another good book from LJ Ross.

intermittently interesting passages

I have really enjoyed the DCI Ryan books by this author, but I found this story implausible and the Parisian setting and French names only detracted from the story. A bit tedious, all in all

Go on, give it a go!!!

Was a bit worried about this book due to the negative reviews, but went ahead anyway. Glad I did, really enjoyed this 2nd book!
There wasn’t as much spoken french as I though, (due to reviews) and not enough that you would feel excluded from the book. And most of it was either explained by characters or narrated.
The plot was easy to work out from the beginning to be honest, but there was a nice little twist at the end. Absolutely love Huge dancys narration, and he obviously speaks fluent french, so that added to my enjoyment!

I’d recommend this book if you enjoy LJ Ross’s books. A few references to DCI Ryan in this book, but that felt quite comforting to me, as I’ve read all of the DCI Ryan series.

I’m about to start the last book in this series, so I’m hoping it’s as good as the first two!

Story OK, narrator awesome

The story is a bit far fetched and the ending very hurried. I still enjoyed listening to the book, probably due to superb narration by Hugh Dancy.
