Summary
The basis for the film starring Academy Award nominee Will Smith, I Am Legend is a classic of horror and suspense.
In I Am Legend, a terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive are transformed into bloodthirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville’s blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?
Richard Matheson’s chilling tale is a white-knuckle ride into a world of darkness and terror.
Critic reviews
"The most clever and riveting vampire novel since Dracula." (Dean Koontz)
"I think the author who influenced me most as a writer was Richard Matheson. Books like I Am Legend were an inspiration to me." (Stephen King)

Great but they haven't made a movie...
There's barely any resemblance between this book and the move that shares the name. I enjoyed the movie and I enjoyed this book.
But it's ridiculous to claim this has anything to do with that movie.

Not to be confused with "Twilight"...
I was not expecting this!!! Despite the explosion of vampire novels in the last couple of years I have managed, on the whole, to avoid this genre. I had heard of the movie and had seen the images of Will Smith and a dog trudging through a ruined landscape. Hard to believe this was written in 1954, but according to Amazon it has been frequently on the Horror best sellers list, no wonder... what a thriller of a story. I have not been able to fall asleep for the last couple of nights (audiobooks in bed usually send me out like a light). The moral of the tale, revealed in the last minutes is one to rival George Orwell. Well narrated and well worth the listen.

Great listen!
I watched the movie before listening to the book and they are very different. I really enjoyed both in different ways but obviously the movie is a big budget Hollywood release and the book is based in the 1970's. The author and narrator bring Robert Neville to life brilliantly and I loved the Jekyll and Hyde inner ramblings of a man on the edge of insanity in an apocalypse. I felt like I was there suffering with him. Will Smith is great but I think if they had made the movie more stripped back with perhaps a different actor and closer to the book, it could have been award winning.

Puts the film to shame
I decided to listen to this book after watching the film, if the film had kept to the original story it would have been fantastic.
I don’t think I will be able to watch it again without feeling disappointed.

What the film did is a travesty
Absolutely harrowing in the best kind of way.
The pacing was a little jarring at points but it was quick to catch up.

A strange and warming paranoid schizoid tale
Would you consider the audio edition of I Am Legend to be better than the print version?
Different to the film
What did you like best about this story?
It grows on you
Have you listened to any of Robertson Dean’s other performances? How does this one compare?
No
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Wasn't sure about it at first but enjoyed it and some years later came back and listened to it again with, surprisingly, better results, hence the review. I would say its a mood dependent kinda story but worth having in your library and written by a master of the genre.
Any additional comments?
Defiantly no Will Smith
