Summary
John Smith is not your average teenager. He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving those who hunt him will find and kill him.
But you can’t run forever. So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, John decides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about – and who care about him. Never in John’s short life has there been space for friendship, or even love.
But it’s just a matter of time before John’s secret is revealed.
He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed. John is Number Four. He knows that he is next...

Amazing!
This book was amazing and gripping! I listen to books at night; I am only 19 and love my audio books. I find it hard to find books I like more to my personal favourites like The Hunger Games and the Boy Solider books but this one really did put up a good fight! I was up for hours on end just wanting to know what happens next! Well written and well read, I highly recommend this, I cannot wait for the film in February 2011 and the second book 'The Power of Six' 10 out of 10!

Reader must be under 18
First - this is a book targeted at teenage boys.
Second - it's only 1st of 6 books (so don't expect any definite end)
When reading the book I couldn't help thinking it's a funny mix of ideas I'd already read before (LotR, HP).
If you keep in mind the intended audience then the predictable plot, the 'seen it before' ideas, the black and white world are easier to accept. But if you expect twists and double-depth characters you might be better off skipping this book altogether.
What is unacceptable is the 'romance' bit. And that's in both form and quantity.
This is where the 'teenage' character of the book really stands out. Sickly exchanges, cheesy cliches and too much kissing for my liking. But then again - what do I know.
Altogether - not a complete waste of time but I'm not yet sure if I can take five more books.

Awful!
Imagine a bunch of children not into comics but sports are forced to sit down and come up with a list of super powers and some sort of plot to link it all together. Then imagine an angst ridden teenage girl being given the task of writing a book based on the list. That creation would be 'I Am Number Four'. Don't buy this!

Easy listen
I'm giving this 4 stars, not because it's a brilliant story, but because as a young adult / teenage read it's fine! A superman-meets-Percy Jackson, which although predictable in the "alien boy falls in love with human girl" kind of way, it's still a very easy listen, and will undoubtedly appeal to the young adult market. I agree with one of the previous reviewer's comments regarding the kissing....although I have no aversion to the act, there is a tad much of it here, and it does become a little nauseating after a while. It's better than a 3 star, but it does fall short of 5 in that it's just a little too predictable.....
The introduction states the authors name, and then that the book is PERFORMED by Adam Kaplan (as opposed to "narrated by"), and I have to give credit where credit is due - he's pretty good! He sounds like a teenage boy one minute, and then a fifty year old Frenchman the next, and this does make listening easier when it comes to identifying who is who....

Listener must be under 15
I got this audiobook for my partner and myself to listen to in the car when we go on long journeys. We're both in our 30s and we wanted something that doesn't require too much attention (as most of your attention should really be on the driving). Unfortunately this was too far in the "low brow" category. Here are my biggest gripes about this opus:
1.) The voice acting is truly awful.
2.) The plot is juvenile, unimaginative, predictable and totally ridiculous.
3.) Most characters are paper thin caricatures (this isn't helped by the dreadful voice acting) and the internal and external dialogue is ludicrous.
4.) The voice acting is so bad it's infuriating.
Unfortunately for me I'm too stubborn to give up on a book, even when they're this bad. Towards the end I was hoping that someone would stab me in the ear with a Mogodorian dagger as this would certainly have been preferable to having to listen to the by-the-numbers denouement.
I think I will give the remaining 5 installments a miss.

Not at all impressed
Be aware that this is a book written with adolescents in mind, if the writing style and plot is anything to go by. Furthermore, there is no ending as such - it is kept open for the next episode(s).
Combined with the irritating reading style or 'performance', as the narrator would have you believe, the only word I can think of to summarise this audiobook is Garbage. I'm just pleased it was cheap - nevertheless a waste of ?7.

For a younger audience than me.
I decided to listen to this rather than see the film and glad I did. It is set really for a younger audience than me and although I enjoyed it - it was not really 'my thing'

Alien story
Not too over the top for alien story, but very predictable. Good characters and story line. Enjoyed the voice reading the story.
