About this listen

It's 1995 in Upstate New York, and Nicole Doherty is days away from her college graduation—that is, if she graduates—ready to move into her own apartment and start a new job in a prestigious accounting firm when an unseen assailant attacks her, only steps away from the safety of her dorm, changing her forever. Nicole is desperate to move on, vowing never to tell anyone what happened to her, but her past continues to follow her and pull her back. She's forced to relearn how to trust herself and thrive in an uncontrollable reality, navigating relationships, old and new, often left wondering, who was her attacker? Could it have been a complete stranger or someone she knows? And do you ever really know someone?

A powerful, emotional and important read

Oh goodness, I don't think a book has ever hit as hard as this one did.

*** Please be aware TW for rape, sexual assault, trauma and healing in the aftermath in this review / book!!

I'd seen this one mentioned a few times on Instagram and added it to my tbr pile.

So when I was offered the opportunity to listen to this as an audio book I jumped at the chance.

And goodness me this was not what I'd expected from the pretty cover (totally significant to the story) and the blurb. My fault entirely, I expected more of a thriller vibe and the 'who was it' story at the centre.

This book was so much more!

I lived the narration of this. It added so much to the story. The fear, emotions and every thought was reflected so well. It was a perfect way to tell this heartbreaking story.

Beautifully written it's the graphic, in depth, heartbreaking, emotional rollercoaster that is one women's story following a horrific rape at college by an unknown assailant.

This book is ALL about the empowerment of Nicole (and women in general) and my heart cried so many times reading this.

From the first chapter, a graphic portrayal of the night Nicole, I knew this book wasnt going to be what I expected.

It was starkly real in its portrayal of the impact of that night and how every event in Nic's life afterwards was affected.

When I've seen sexual assault / rape featured in other books (and I've only seen it in a few) its usually skipped over with a few after effects mentioned.

Not here. OMG my heart broken for Nicole as she struggled to adjust to life after, even after her move to the city.

And damn right CHEERED out loud for her and the other women at the group she found (which incidentally I discovered is a REAL group in the US)

And I did love the way the 'who was it' aspect featured in the story. I REALLY don't want to give any spoilers here (do avoid reviews on Goodreads etc if you dont want to know) but I spent the whole book 'knowing' but keeping fingers crossed.

LOVED the ending of this one. Exactly (mostly anyway) what I wanted it to be.

This story also has a fantastic interwoven storyline of family connections and her relationship with her mum and sister.

This is a book I know I will read again and again and recommend to EVERYONE. Its hard hitting and so powerful. A stark reminder of the strength, courage and support of women. Sadly in reflection of something that affects so many, everyday.

Powerful

You think it will never happen to you and Nicole sure didn't think it would. Counting down the last few days of college and getting ready for graduation, the unthinkable happens, Nicole is r*ped. A really strong, shocking opening that makes you gasp.

The book follows Nicole as she trys to navigate, process and burying what happens to her. Ultimately she wants to forget, pretend it never happened. But she is jumpy, paranoid and a emotional wreck. That is until she takes back her power and re discovers her worth.

I really loved the relationship with her sister Jamie too. A pillar of strength for Nicole even with her own issues. They really get each other and Nicole also helps Jamie realise that someone close to her behaviour is unacceptable.

A story of resilience, acceptance, taking back control and power, learning to love one's self again and being a survivor all rolled into this emotional roller-coaster.

An important and powerful read that needs to be kept in the forefront and everyone should read. I would go as far to say get it into every high school.
