Summary

At a remote ice station in Antarctica, a team of U.S. scientists has made an amazing discovery. They have found something buried deep within a 100-million-year-old layer of ice. Something made of metal. Led by enigmatic Lieutenant Shane Schofield, a team of crack United States Marines is sent to the station to secure this discovery for their country. They are a tight unit, tough and fearless. They would follow their leader into hell. They just did...

Critic reviews

"Some of the wildest and most sustained battles in an action thriller in a long time...non-stop action, lots of explosions--and a little bit of conspiracy." ( Chicago Tribune)

Gripping Action from Start to Finsih

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, it is fast paced and edge of the seat stuff. I couldn't put it down

What did you like best about this story?

The action, and the suspense which built up

Which character – as performed by Sean Mangan – was your favourite?

Shane Schofield of course

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Close to the end

Any additional comments?

If you like military style action books this won't disappoint, although being a brit there was one painful facet.

I enjoyed this thriller ....

I read this book when it came out years ago and loved it , therefore I wanted it now as an audiobook read out to me - and again I loved the book, as I had forgotten all about the plot ...
fast moving and enticing ...

Okay

A couple of things going against it...really bad attempts at accents and irritating halts in the narrative. Aside from that it's entertaining enough I guess.

fantastic book

Another great book by Matthew Reilly, I first read it many years ago and am now working my way back through his book with Audible. Once again, the book was narrated excellently by Sean Mangan

Exciting

I have been a fan of these books for years, but this is the first I have enjoyed them through Audible and it was just as exciting as reading it to myself. I love the story, it's fast-paced adrenalin rush keeps me hooked on every page. And the narrator for the audio book managed to capture that energy. Loved it

It could have been fantastic....

Fantastic writing, fantastic narration but a story far too exaggerated to relate to as a credible action novel. The main character's exploits make James Bond look tame. You'll listen once but you won't dig out in a year and re-listen.

As fast and actioned packed as you can get!

The first of the 'Scarecrow' series this introduces the main characters and sets the pace for all Matthew Reilly's Novels.
Pure Escapism with unbelievable twists and turns and more lucky and creative escapes than the love child of Blackadder and Houdini.

Set in a snowy ice blasted hell hole you won't believe how much action fits in such a small area.

A fantastical special ops thriller

If you could sum up Ice Station in three words, what would they be?

Fantastical (some stuff is clearly make believe but never feels over the top)
Thrilling (moves along at a good pace, never felt bored)
Intriguing (lots of twists and turns)

What other book might you compare Ice Station to, and why?

I've not read any of the others by this author.
The special ops/military aspect is less serious than an Andy McNabb or Chris Ryan book but may appeal if like me you enjoyed them but were a bit sick of back to Afghanistan.
The pacing reminds me of Dan Brown's books, but the lead character doesn't come off as so smug.

What does Sean Mangan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He does a good job with all the different accents and each character felt different.
His delivery is entertaining. Though at one point he has to read a long list of names, twice, which I expect works better in print.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nope, I did grin at the arrival of a team half way through the book and the innovative but sadly it seems fantastical weapon they brought with them.

Any additional comments?

This references events which I assume took place in the authors book Temple. I haven't read that and don't feel I was kept in the dark but now I have no plans to go back to read it. If you have a urge to read that book, read it first.
Otherwise an entertaining read and I have downloaded the next book with Scarecrow in.

Told it was good, so I listened

It was recommended to me, but i was disappointed. There was far too much as if the writer was trying to get as much action in as possible. It was like listening to McGyver, James Bond and Firefox all in one.
It is fairly entertaining at that, but was flatly read.

Brilliant book, real fast, paced and fun. You just have to switch your mind off

Brilliant book very well narrated. I have actually read this book years ago. My one downer for the audio version is it doesn’t include the maps and diagrams of the ice station and they change as a story continues. Don’t wanna spoil it would be nice if there was an option to be able to download them because it does help with the story, and with visualising everything in your head, but otherwise a brilliant book hence why I bought the audio version years after reading the physical
