About this listen

A strikingly sincere portrait of a town and its buried secrets from an outstanding new voice in southern fiction.

In a North Carolina mountain town filled with moonshine and rotten husbands, Sadie Blue is only the latest girl to face a dead-end future at the mercy of a dangerous drunk. She's been married to Roy Tupkin for 15 days, and she knows now that she should have listened to the folks who said he was trouble. But when a stranger sweeps in and knocks the world off-kilter for everyone in town, Sadie begins to think there might be more to life than being Roy's wife.

As stark and magnificent as Appalachia itself, If the Creek Don't Rise is a bold and beautifully layered debut about a dusty, desperate town finding the inner strength it needs to outrun its demons. The folks of Baines Creek will take you deep into the mountains with heart, honesty, and homegrown grit.

Superbly written and narrated!

The characters are so well created and enforced. Each one unique, colourful, pitiful and real. A truly disturbing yet heartwarming story all in one.

Listened to it twice already.

I ain't never been to the Appalachians but thanks to the best storyteller in the Audible catalogue, Tom Stechschulte, I can see into the heart and spirit of these mountain people. a stunning achievement.

What a find

Absolutely beautiful characters and performance although the full development of characters felt somewhat truncated, as if the book ended before it was supposed to. Eg Kate snd Ely? That never developed? Pity. I could have gone either way another 15 chapters to see the characters and relationships play out further.

Slow and steady then abrupt ending!

Struggled to get into this and found my mind wandering a bit. Writing was good in parts and some great descriptions of the people and location, but felt like it finished very abruptly so was left feeling a bit disappointed
