Quite enjoyable fir a quick holiday read …

but on the whole lacked a bit of dept. However it was easy to listen too snd the narrator was great

Enjoyable, but...

This is a fine listen for passing a bit of time. However give it a skip if you're newly sober - the main character clearly has problems with drinking, but this is presented as part of her quirky character rather than anything deeper.

Lacklustre and daft

Kelk is a really talented and hilarious writer but I feel like she was 'phoning it in' with this. Whilst it was quite cosy and escapist, and at times funny, *way* more of it was just unconvincing and daft. I'm not saying books have to always be completely true to life but I just didn't buy a lot of the details at all. Whose parents are quite so calm if you walk in on them playing kinky games in the lounge? In general, I have no idea what on EARTH was going on with the parent plot line at all, I just don't understand. The main character's dad appears to be a sexist old fashioned twit who by his own account seems lukewarm about his wife, and despite the fact he appears to have been absent bringing up their daughters and cost the mum character a brilliant career, mum has fallen madly in love with him again?! Also, he designs bathrooms for a living but can't even seem to build a watertight shed in his garden. It just didn't feel very convincing in the way it was presented.

There were also far too many silly details like a book floating away in a flood from the shed that was barely leaking five minutes ago - it all made the story feel less warmhearted and more dodgy slapstick. On the whole, it just didn't really ever feel like it got going, especially compared to Kelk's best books, or the other talented writers in this genre. I feel the storylines could have been explored a bit more, to the point where I was sort of rewriting the book in my head as it was unfolding! One minute Sumi is busy, then suddenly without explanation she's free - to suit the plot. Just a bit lazy. And there was very little chemistry between the main character and John the barman - one of the least convincing love plots I've ever seen. I think this is because the narrator was, although pithy and charismatic, a bit of a stock character and there wasn't much to get to know. Just a bit...uninspired! By far, the ballsy best friend character Sumi was the best bit of this book!

A lovely humorous story

This book was such a lovely story, it reminded me of having a duvet day, snuggling up and watching a funny, light hearted afternoon film.

It's my very first Lindsey Kelk book that I have listened too and I really enjoyed it.

I loved the narrator Sophie Roberts, it is so important to have a narrator that sounds the same age as the actual main characters.

If you want cheering up then listen to this book because it definitely made me laugh.
I would recommend this book on a sale price. 😀

It you find the narrator slow then up your narration speed like I do 👍

Not your typical romance

Not your typical romance with the typical, actually non existent dilemmas. Lovely set of secondary characters, funny and I really loved the narrator!

Holiday read art best

I didn't warm to the characters at all. Too many clichés and the plot was very predictable. I only read it for my book club. Won't be reading any more from this author.
