Summary
In Search Of Black History with Bonnie Greer brings you face-to-face with the people you never knew existed. People whose stories tell us a different tale about who we all are. From the earliest glimmerings of modern humanity, up to the present day, Bonnie Greer uncovers the lives of people of African descent that don’t fit with the accepted history of Western Civilisation we’ve traditionally been taught. From saints, to philosophers, to warrior women and king’s heralds - these people’s lives have been lost, hidden and distorted down the centuries. We’ve lost the full richness and complexity of our shared histories - it’s time to fill in the gaps.
In this eight part series, playwright and former Trustee of the British Museum, Bonnie Greer, travels with us through the ages, meeting the academics and experts who are uncovering these stories at the cutting edge of historical research, and she brings their subjects’ lives to life - with an imaginative re-telling of their stories.

Satisfying and edifying
This series more than anything I have watched, listened to or read; has rejuvenated my desire to study history, black history is particular.

Life questioning and, hopefully, changing too
I am seen as a white British male, but are any of us white... or black, brown, red or yellow? Are we not al just citizen of this Earth, and therefore, equal?
Through Geneology websites, I discovered the untold story of my family’s small part in British Empire, that my ancestors were not as white as they portrayed, on multiple levels. It has left me the guilt (and pride) of past actions and questioning what to acknowledge or condemn... and more importantly, my role in our world today.
Series such as this, don’t give answers to my questions, but help to recognise our collective responsibility for our history and necessarily for our future.

Essential listening in these troubled times
Thank you Bonnie Greer and team for this re-education, this re-looking again at history and challenging of the lens we too often default to and accept when looking backwards and around us. Beautifully done, moving and life-affirming. Loved it!

Bonnie’s narration is amazing it immerses you into the story so fully and it’s complemented by the amazing experts who open up to us a better fuller picture of history. Why did i not learn about these civilisations and peoples when I did my history A levels? Loved it!

I need therapy having listened to this!
It was a combination of the Titanic and the intensity of Saving Private Ryan with the duration and drama of the Titanic. A cliff hanger and at times confusing to follow. Ended abruptly as if I’d fallen off my chair following a long snooze. I couldn’t relate but this is because I haven’t been in a violent relationship. I was nieve to think it may have projected a positive image of a genuinely loving, sincere, honest and devoted husband.

Very informative, intelligently presented
This is a series for the general public/listener but does not feel dumbed-down. I learnt a lot I didn’t know before and I have been living in Africa for a long time and take interest in these issues.
There were some excellent interviews with people conducting deep and difficult research and I felt very grateful that there are people out these doing this work to bring to light these buried, complex and sometimes ambiguous stories.
Well done! I look forward to more programnes on similar themes from Audible.

A brilliant journey through Black History
Thanks to Bonnie Greer and her team for creating this. Vast swathes of information that was not known to me as a white person, despite my friendships and work with people from black and ethnic minority communities. I’ve been on a mission to find out more and yet this demonstrates how much there is yet to uncover. It’s also an examination of being human with both triumphs and flaws, and the history of black women stirred me in particular. Very much an essential listen.
