About this listen
Mitch is on a last-ditch drive to save his career with the Scottish Institute of Archaeology after his ex-lover Lewis stole his research into the legendary Pictish saints. Mystical pre-Celtic statues are hidden somewhere on mist-wreathed Dove Island. Now Mitch is tearing out to the coast in the hope of reaching the saints before his treacherous ex can stake a claim. At his side is his devoted assistant, Owen. Owen adores Mitch, but he's the quiet, loyal type. Despite himself, Mitch is still dazzled by memories of flamboyant Lewis - and in danger of destroying his newfound happiness with Owen. As the race for the saints intensifies, Mitch is losing perspective. Will he learn how to appreciate the love of a good man before he plunges himself and Owen too far into the deadly mysteries of Dove Island?

Great mystery, annoying male lead
I am an avid fan of Harper Fox. The author manages to convey believable romance with a sprinkle of supernatural (or a whole dollop in some series) with well developed characters all the while utilising some of the best literary turn of phrase I have ever had the pleasure to read. Knowing all the above, this book slightly disappoints. Not on the language front, mind you, neither in the story spookiness department (got that in spades as usual). Its the characters I could not get into. While Fox sometimes does have some... unheroic and sometimes downright morally ambiguous characters, they are always highly likeable. I'm sure she could make a serial killer character to be the most charming individual ever (Like the show Hannibal managed to do). But neither of the male leads or the ex-boyfriend villain are compelling in any sense of the word. Main character is a bore and a complete asshole, second male lead is kind, loyal but a bit of a mop. The villain is just... mostly not even there honestly. Does one redeemable thing in the end but it kinda doesnt matter. The main character does get his shit together at the end but there is a looooot of moping around and the good stuff starts in the last 5th of the book. Honestly, I gave 4 stars because the premise and the language are still gorgeous but if I had to rate the characters alone I would rate lower as I KNOW Harper does them better. This one just didn't work for me. But do check it out for the mystery alone!

Interesting book
I enjoyed the book regardless of the length. Sometimes all I want is a short book, nothing heavy. I felt the book was long enough to get to know the characters. The main character Mitch was self-centred and Owen was too good for him. Narration was decent as well.

Saints on the Scottish islands
Sounds fascinating till the weather turns nasty and our hero's go out on a small boat then it all turns strange and the saints they are looking for find them and stirs the romance.
