About this listen
An all-new story arc begins here!
The new grandmaster of Whitehall doesn't want Emily in his school. She's dangerous, he thinks. The only way he'll allow her to return to Whitehall is if she chooses to be a probationary student, a student who can be expelled at the slightest excuse, a student who has to work for one of the professors. Reluctantly, unwilling to leave her first true home, Emily accepts.
But she rapidly discovers that she's about to be pushed right to the limit. She's expected to do her studies, continue her private research...and mentor a group of young students who are new to the school. She has to supervise them, all the while trying to balance her schoolwork with her growing relationship with Caleb. It isn't an easy task.
And when Professor Locke starts opening the tunnels under the school, hunting for the lost secrets of Old Whitehall, he triggers a series of disasters that threaten to tear the school apart. As the staff and students struggle to survive, with the very walls collapsing in around them, Emily is forced to solve a disturbing mystery...and figure out what it has to do with her private research, before the entire school comes to a final catastrophic end.

good fantasy concepts, but....?
I've listened to all of these books so far, and I do enjoy the concept and overall story line. I have to say I find some of the emotional vehicles the author uses to be quite wearing, something I think is made worse in an audio book because it's easy to read more.
If I had a pound for every time Emily either winces, sighs, rolls her eyes or curses "inwardly" I'd be very very rich. It's damned annoying now.
I'm also feeling the reader, while consistent, and good at portraying the various characters has a constant anxiety in her voice which makes the books harder to listen to for long periods. I feel after this much time (five years for Emily) that Emily would have much less of this. I can only think its under direction from a producer.
In some respects, there's far too much emphasis on Emily's internal monologue and emotions, because its becoming very very repetitive, especially this far into the series.
PLEASE Mr Nuttall, can we have more pace of story throughout the books and less of this eternal struggle Emily is having in her head all the time. It very much feels like life happens to Emily and then she's forced into doing "something" in a desperate moment of panic in the last 4 chapters.
Emily's love interest Kaylib is starting to grate on me now also.
The next book promises to be good, however I'm dreading the amount of wincing inwardly I'm going to have to endure in order to get through it.
