About this listen
From the Collins Crime Club archive, the sixth Inspector French novel by Freeman Wills Crofts, once dubbed ‘The King of Detective Story Writers’.
A MURDER MYSTERY WITHOUT A CLUE
When Sir John Magill, the wealthy Irish industrialist, fails to show up at his home town on a well-publicised visit, neither his family nor the Belfast police can explain his disappearance. Foul play is suspected when his bloodstained hat is discovered, and Scotland Yard is called in. With his characteristic genius for reconstruction, Inspector French evolves a gruesome theory about what happened to the elderly man, but his reputation – and that of Scotland Yard – will depend on finding out who was responsible . . .

‘Nobody takes more trouble to get every detail absolutely correct. This most workmanlike of sleuths unravels a really satisfying puzzle.’ DAILY MAIL
“A detective novel by Mr. Wills Crofts is always an event to those who know … Mr. Crofts is among the few muscular writers of detective fiction. He has never let me down.”
HAROLD NICOLSON, DAILY EXPRESS

Enjoyable Read
Narration excellent by Phil Fox. This plot relied on much minutiae around timings and seemed over-long and detailed (even for Inspector French) in one particular chapter. Stick with it since overall, it was imaginative with plenty of action at the end. I am now familiar with the place names around ports in N. Ireland and west of Scotland and enjoyed a little insight in (for me) an unfamiliar location. Roll on my next Inspector French audio book!

Greatly enjoyed
I love these intricately plotted books. Good old fashioned detection.
Having read masses of modern crime novels and watched on tv, I find it refreshing to listen to a crime novel without overload of “human interest”.
Excellent narration.

This one was not for me!
Enjoyed all the Inspector French stories up to now but this one was not for me. Stodgy and slow. So much so I almost didn’t finish it and that is unheard of! The story line is unexciting and gets very bogged down in detail. I am hoping it’s a one off and have already downloaded the next story in hope of Insp French getting back to form!

Oh so boring
I've listened to two other Wills Croft stories and quite enjoyed them, but this one I couldn't even finish. Not only did the narrator sound as if he too was bored rigged, there was nothing to take ones interest. Just facts and more facts, no real story, and no characters to wonder about. I shalln't buy anyone from this author.
