Øen er Japans eneste vindue til omverdenen, og her flokkes snedige handlende, spioner, tolke og konkubiner. Den naive Jacob har fem år til at tjene en formue, som er stor nok til, at han kan vinde sin velhavende forlovedes hånd hjemme i Holland.

Hans oprindelige plan kompliceres dog, da han tilfældigt møder Orito Aibagawa, den lokale jordemoder, som han forelsker sig i. Da Orito bliver solgt til et hemmeligt broderskab for at dække sin afdøde fars gæld, står Jacob tilsyneladende magtesløs tilbage.
