About this listen

In January of 1995, 17-year-old Lizzette Martinez met Grammy-winning musician and record producer R. Kelly at Aventura Mall in Florida where he was performing. At first, it seemed that her hopes of becoming a professional singer were about to come true when he offered to help boost her career. However, this mentorship quickly turned into sexual grooming, leading to years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.

After struggling to free herself of the relationship and rebuild on her own, Lizzette’s successful new life, far away from the entertainment industry, was interrupted in 2017 by allegations against R. Kelly by other women. This led her to coming forward to the authorities with her own history of abuse by the music icon.

In January 2019, Lizzette participated with other survivors in a documentary series with Lifetime called Surviving R. Kelly. It should have been a healing experience, but instead it left them feeling abandoned and fearful for their lives.

In August 2021, Kelly went on trial in New York on racketeering and sex-trafficking charges and was found guilty of all charges.

In Jane Doe #9 by Lizzette Martinez and Keelin MacGregor, listeners get a no-holds-barred look at Martinez’s relationship with Kelly, her efforts to break free and pursue her dreams, and courage to take on her abuser and seek justice.

Powerful and disturbing

This was such a moving account of a victims’s struggle to survive and reveals disturbing insight into the way the R Kelly survivors were further mistreated for the making of the documentary which I was not previously aware. Wishing all the survivors healing and great futures .

cautionary tale

This story is definitely 1 I will save for my daughter when she's a bit older. Teenage girls are so vulnerable to powerful older men unless they are so secure and have really strong protective foundations they can easily fall prey. Poor Lizzette made so many bad decisions and had so many opportunities to focus on her, she should've gone to the motown meeting, she should've took the £8k a month job but she always put others needs above her own. I really hope she can rebuild a life she will be proud of after everything she has been though over the years

Lizzette

So glad because of this amazing lady and the other women that came forward that this beast of a man was finally caught and jailed. Hopefully he never sees the light of day again in his lifetime.
I also can’t believe how these brave women never received any help whatsoever. No therapy,no security nothing.
