About this listen
A gifted storyteller and spiritual director, Father James Martin, SJ, invites readers to experience the stories of the Gospels in a completely new, vivid, and exciting way to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus. Moving sequentially through the Gospels, considering not only familiar passages but also the "hidden life" of Jesus, the book offers a bold retelling of the life of Christ, faithful to the Christian tradition, while meditating on parts of the narrative that have often escaped notice.
Martin provides personal stories from his own life, the most up-to-date biblical scholarship, and powerful anecdotes from beloved spiritual teachers, and brings the reader along on his own real-life travels through the Holy Land.
Combining the fascinating insights of historical Jesus studies with profound spiritual reflections about the Christ of faith, Martin re-creates the world of first-century Galilee and Judea to usher us into Jesus's life and times and reveal how Jesus speaks to us today. Jesus: A Pilgrimage is an invitation to know Jesus as Father Martin knows him: Messiah and Savior, as well as friend and brother.

A book to enjoy
The book combines elements of a travelogue, the life of Jesus in the culture of the first century AD and the use of strong references as a resource.
Father James Martin, a Jesuit spiritual leader, and his friend George tour the Holy Land visiting both well-known and little-known places which were important in Jesus’ life. Having never visited the Holy Land, I found his descriptions fascinating.
His own opinions and meditations and those of other respected theologians are interwoven into the content around Jesus’ life and work.
All-in-all, after an uncertain start, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
The narration was excellent and the book gave me a lot to think about.

Jesus: A Pilgrimage
This is a brilliant book, read by the author James Martin with passion, enthusiasm and humour. He brought Jesus alive in a new way for me and I found myself experiencing everything he spoke about on his trip to the Holy Land. I listen again and again to chapters and never get bored! James has really helped me to see Jesus in a new way, I highly recommend this wonderful book!

Mixed genre, solid scholarship, great breadth
Maybe I enjoyed this book the more, because it brought back the experiences of my own pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and found Fr Jim's personal accounts of of his peregrinations in search of the Holy Places evocative and honest. At first, I was a wee bit concerned we might be treated to all the "holiday snaps", but Fr Jim does know how to weave together personal experience, theology, history, archaeology, bible criticism and exegesis from many sources. And he is never po' faced. I'm glad that his pilgrimage gave him as much pleasure (but sometimes irritation) as mine did, but he can tell the tale better and to more effect than I.

A great listen with plenty of small interesting details.
I really enjoyed this listen and I'll be sure to re-listen. I really enjoyed the nation too. quite a lot of the time I don't enjoy the American accent on audio books though I found James Martin an easy smooth listen.
