About this listen
Most people are unaware that Mark Twain spent over a decade researching Saint Joan of Arc and wrote what he considered to be his greatest work - Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc - originally published in Harper's Magazine in 1895 as chapters attributed to the fictitious author Sieur Louis de Conte.
When the public found out that Twain was actually the author, many were suspicious, thinking Twain was perpetrating some kind of a joke. Twain's biographer Albert Paine defends Twain saying it is actually his greatest writing: "Considered from every point of view, Joan of Arc is Mark Twain's supreme literary expression, the loftiest, the most delicate, the most luminous example of his work."

Captivating but emotional
It took a wee while for me to get into this book. The narrator's voice was a little of putting to begin with and the very early years of joans life not of much interest to me. However, once the story progressed i was drawn in. I loved Mark Twains portrayal of Joan and was impressed throughout but emotional at the end.

Narrator totally ruins this book.
I have grinded my way to at least half way through this book, but the narrator totally ruins it,
The narrator is better suited to childrens books with how he reads this and his american accent along with voice acting does not in anyway suit this kind of audiobook.
Luckily for me i already know the story of Joan of Arc, so i know roughly where it is upto etc, but to enjoy this story is just outright impossible, I strongly suggest listening to a sample and ensure that you can endure this awful narrator for 16 hours.

Narrated by Siri
The book itself is beautiful, I’ve read it before and adored it. However listening to it felt like being sat down by a male Siri and narrated instructions on how to cook your local religious icon. Barely got a few chapters in before having to quit, absolutely unbearable but at least it means Joan survived for once.
