About this listen

Judy, a beautiful liver and white English pointer, and the only animal POW of WWII, truly was a dog in a million. Whether she was dragging men to safety from the wreckage of a torpedoed ship, scavenging food to help feed the starving inmates of a hellish Japanese POW camp, or by her presence alone bringing inspiration and hope to men living through the 20th century's darkest days, she was cherished and adored by the British, Australian, American and other Allied servicemen who fought to survive alongside her.

Viewed largely as human by those who shared her extraordinary life, Judy's uncanny ability to sense danger, matched with her quick-thinking and impossible daring saved countless lives. She was a close companion to men who became like a family to her, sharing in both the tragedies and joys they faced. It was in recognition of the extraordinary friendship and protection she offered amidst the unforgiving and savage environment of a Japanese prison camp in Indonesia that she gained her formal status as a POW.

Judy's unique combination of courage, kindness and fun repaid that honour a thousand times over and her incredible story is one of the most heartwarming and inspiring tales you will ever read.

The fact it is a true story

The most important aspect of this book is that it provides a comprehensive overview of how the men and women suffered and the total loyalty of man’s closest friend and partner within the animal kingdom whose stories are so many times overlooked and forgotten in times of conflict, crisis, and death. With books like this, hopefully these endeavours will never be forgotten.

Wow what a dog

I was gripped from the first chapter. What an emotional journey this takes you through and compels you to get to the end to find out what happens. A well deserved DM holder. The audio is brilliantly read as well.

Judy a dog in a million

An excellently written account of a beautiful English Pointer called Judy. Damien Lewis takes the listener into a terrible war, the Japanese were ruthless, it was hard not to hate the Japanese. The lengths the officers and soldiers would go to not to lose face was horrendous. One has to remember this was a time of war, America stopped the Japanese war with nuclear bombs. In this part of the book the listener can only feel sorrow for the innocent Japanese people.
I enjoyed the book, it takes your emotions wrings them out, then uplifts the listener. Judy kept the POWs going, her presents uplifted their spirits, gave them hope.
Judy’s life ended in Kenya, an old lady, tired and in pain it was right to give her freedom to cross the Rainbow Bridge. She’d achieved more than most dogs in terrible conditions, starving, cruelly beaten by the Japanese, her indomitable spirit would not be broken. I felt sad when Judy died, it was like losing an old friend.

Harrowing story at times but Judy was a true hero.

Beautifully narrated , and true story. My uncle was on the ship and camps along side Judy. He didn't talk much about his experiences but did mention Judy. That the story was about the bond that Judy had with the prisoners took some of the horror out of the story.
