About this listen

Julie Wallace is just 18 in 1934 when her father risks their life savings on a struggling newspaper and moves the family to a flood-prone Pennsylvania town. It is here a young woman's convictions take firm root, as Julie finds herself taking sides when battle lines are drawn between desperate steelworkers and the mill owners who control their lives. And it is here where her heart and her loyalties are torn, divided between two special men. But when a devastating natural catastrophe becomes the ultimate test of courage and commitment, Julie's remarkable inner strength will come to the fore, a strength born of faith and love. And don't miss Catherine Marshall's beloved best seller Christy.

I found it gripping, moving and inspiring

At the start of this book I thought it very similar to Christy, Catherine Marshall's best-selling novel about a feisty young woman with two very different men in her life. However, as I continued I became enthralled. This is an engaging storyline which gives you much to think about, at least it did so for me. It is a story about courage and doing what you can. You will love Julie and root for the characters you meet. I won't give any spoilers as the book is intended to keep you guessing. It highlights authentic Christian faith. if you get offended by books that have a message of faith you may find this book annoying, however I do believe the storyline is gripping and inspiring enough for anyone. I finished the book in two sessions. It made me laugh out loud in places, cry and feel the situation. I will be listening to it again. Very good book, definitely a keeper.

Any additional comments?

I wasn't sure about this story when I first started to listen to it, there seemed to be a lot of description at the beginning but the description really came into its own at the end, I couldn't put it down, wanted to know what happened to all the characters I had got to know through the book.
as the title suggests this is about Julie who helps, with the other members of the family, her father with the running of the newly acquired newspaper, it does have a bit of romance but its not the central part of the story.
Cassandra Campbell performed the story really well bringing the characters to life and making it an enjoyable read.
