Amusing entertainment

OK, it may not be great literature but I was kept entertained and really enjoyed this audible book. Gemma Dawson's performance did slightly put me off at first (does she have to read so slowly) and her 'posh' accent did grate a little, but not enough to put me off. I woukd recommend this book to light mystery lovers, particularly those who have a love of 1920's.

Enjoyable!

'Just Make Believe' by Maggie Robinson.
Genre: Cosy Murder Mystery

About the Book: This is the Third book in the Lady Adelaide (Lady A) series. Lady A is feeling down in the dumps and attends a week-long party In the country. Lady A is soon informed by her 'dead husband' that a murder will soon occur and the next day the hostess is found dead on the conservatory floor. Lady A knows who just to call and she finds out a lot more than she ever thought possible.

My Review: Lady A is witty, strong and funny as always. Rupert is back being charming yet I want to slap him on the back of his ghostly head everytime I find out about the repeated times he has cheated on Lady A when he was alive. The mystery is intriguing, I enjoyed how it developed throughout the story. I feel the author does a great job of showing awareness of how a lot of men in the 1920s felt they couldn't show their emotions due to having to have a 'macho' appearance. I feel this is still relevant today. The countryside manor and 1920's era is described beautifully without being overly descriptive.

It is very frustrating to see that one of the main relationships in the story has still not developed any further and this is the third book in the series! It is slightly off putting for the next book. This novel is not as strong as the other two.

Maggie has announced the fourth novel of this series to come out in September 2021.

Good plot but ...

This series has interesting plot lines and well set in 1920s. However for the British reader anachronistic Americanisms like drapes for curtains and sidewalk for pavement really grate. In addition there are occasional mispronunciations that are difficult to ignore. A pity as it distracts from an enjoyable listen.

Americans trying to write about the British …. again!!

Quite fun but getting fed up with Americans trying to persuade everyone they understand 1920s Britain - they don’t! Aside from the constant reference to pants instead of trousers and all the other schoolgirl errors, I get fed up with the constant barrage about foxhunting which includes a lot of rubbish “facts” which are just wrong and show a willingness to make a judgment about something she doesn’t understand.

mixed feelings....

this series started out very much like the type of cozy I enjoy, the plots, protagonists and locations are just right. A few inconsistencies here or there, but they don't bother me.
What really makes a difference however are the very frequent mispronounciations, its getting worse and they are not exactly difficult words, even if some of them are French.
In this latest installment it was very disruptive to the flow of the story.
If I continue with this, it will not be as an audio book.
(The narrator has a pleasant voice and does a good job otherwise)

a very good listen

I could really picture the characters and the setting of a 1920s country house party. Nice plot twists and I really like the addition of the helpful ghost.
