Summary

Finally, it happened.

Deep in the forest, they arrived.

For years, everything was kept under wraps.

Looking back on it now, he can clearly see the signs. They were as plain as the oversized head sitting atop his narrow shoulders. Although he was too young to know the difference then, he has always been different than the rest - freakishly intelligent to a degree bordering on clairvoyance.

The United States government did their best to contain it, going so far as to dust off an old playbook from World War II. But this is the 1980s and news travels faster than Donkey Kong can scale a ladder. Everyone knows because they are watching it unfold in real-time on cable TV.

But their plan did not account for someone like him - someone like Kepler.

If they had just told the truth, things would probably be much different. Maybe worse. Instead, he is forced into making an impossible choice: stay or go? The implications for a generation designated by the school as “gifted and talented” hang in the balance, not to mention his own life, and the one he loves.

Sometimes, the truth does not set you free.
