Summary
Captain William Hawksmoor of the Royal Navy never expected to inherit Kingscastle and is none too pleased when he does so. Especially when he learns that he must marry within a year or be forever dealing with trustees.
As the new marquis of Athelney, the captain takes command of Kingscastle and discovers much to be done to set it in order. He must also contend with his aunt Lady Willoughby Hawksmoor, who is determined that her daughter will be his wife. When she discovers he is far more interested in Eleanor Burgess, her underpaid and much put-upon companion, Lady Willoughby shows she will stop at nothing to keep them apart.

Excellent new author
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, expertly read by Matt Addis. The detail of the landscape, weather and flood were very vividly depicted and convincing. The plot charming and unexpected in places. A marvellous baddie to hate and some nice naval references. Keep them coming Sophia Holloway. Although set in the regency period the language was not full of contemporary slang but used normal timeless speech patterns. It paid lip service to the period without parody.

Thoroughly enjoyable
The characters are beautifully drawn and their behaviour typical of the period. The narrator was wonderful.

A joy from start to finish
Another brilliant story from the author, superbly brought to life by the narrator who has the perfect voice for these novels.
Loved it.

Dragged on.
The start was good, with three available bachelors. The heroines were all different, but it didn't need much imagination to guess who would end up with whom.
There was a genuine story to start with, then; for no apparent reason, except for extending the story, everything fell apart. Followed by pages and pages of soul searching, doubting, inexplicite anger, in fact a "kitchen sink" of emotions.
The end totally ruined the beginning, the main characters got lost in the "breast beating" of the end.

Good fun
All the characters a bit over the top. Heroes heroic, villains villanous, etc. However quite entertainingly written and beautifully read by Matt Addis.

Had potential...
Fantastic narration and otherwise interesting characters and situations; showed insight to life below-stairs, in the workhouses and aboard ship during the regency period - unfortunately dragged down by excruciating main romance plot...
The premise and characters had the potential to be enjoyable listening. A really interesting premise of Navy military men suddenly dealing with running an estate and dealing with local gentry, there was so much potential to have blending the best of Patrick O'Brian (Master and Commander) and regency comedy/romance Georgette Heyer. Lovely sub-plots, and details of workers lives on an estate and below decks, with military tactics interestingly interspersed. But then there were pages and pages of excruciating detail of the primary romance plot and inconsistent characterisation of the main female character. Frankly, had the female romantic character been edited out and everything else remained the same, it would have been a decent story.
The narrator's performance (Matt Addis) was great, and will be looking to see what other novels he had read.

This has been such a joyous experience to listen to this wonderful story
All characters in the story are brilliant - even the evil ones and I couldn’t stop …
Highly recommendable and I immediately bought the other two books of the author in hope they will be equally entertaining…

Well paced & beautifully narrated story
This was my second audiobook by Sophia Holloway, narrated by Matt Addis. I have really enjoyed these regency stories. Matt Addis brings the characters alive with his narration.
