On peut voir dans l'Odyssée une allégorie de la vie humaine, où les voyages d'Ulysse sont les épreuves qu'il nous faut traverser pour nous accomplir.
En arrière-plan, l'Iliade, où Ulysse s'illustre. C'est lui qui invente ce Cheval de Troie qui met fin à la guerre fratricide entre Grecs.
Sur le chemin du retour une foule de dangers le guettent : Charybde, Scylla, les Sirènes, le terrifiant Cyclope Polyphème, et des déesses séductrices comme la nymphe Calypso ou la magicienne Circé.
Un dieu rancunier, Poséidon, lui barre le chemin du retour. Mais la déesse Athéna se tient à ses côtés, protectrice, pour lui venir en aide.
Ulysse pourrait épouser Nausicaa, fille du roi des Phéaciens qui l'a accueilli. Mais il n'a pas oublié Pénélope, sa fidèle épouse. Revenu à Ithaque, il se venge des prétendants qui convoitaient son trône et la reine. L'ordre ainsi rétabli, Ulysse et Pénélope vivront enfin heureux.
