Summary

Quando nel giugno 1941 Hitler scatenò l'"operazione Barbarossa" contro l'Unione Sovietica, avrebbe fatto volentieri a meno dell'aiuto italiano; l'Italia, aveva scritto a Mussolini, avrebbe giovato di più concentrando il suo impegno in Nordafrica.

Ma Mussolini voleva esserci a tutti i costi, e fece costituire il Corpo di spedizione italiano in Russia (Csir), che a metà luglio partì per il fronte orientale.

Un anno dopo, unito a nuovi corpi d'armata nell'Armir (Armata italiana in Russia), fu schierato sul Don dove l'offensiva sovietica, fra dicembre 1942 e gennaio 1943, lo annientò. Dei 230 mila italiani partiti per la Russia, 95 mila non fecero ritorno: uccisi in combattimento o morti di stenti e di freddo nelle "marce del davaj" e in prigionia.

unnecessary and long preamble

Spends too much time talking about events that are a) not directly pertinent and b) absolutely well known to historians. A lot of time could have been saved if Giusti had got straight to the point. pays too much tribute to the valour of the Italian soldier rather than to the criminal nature of Italy's invasion.
