Summary
En ese segundo no sucedió nada visible. François, el dúctil camarero del gran hotel de la Riviera se inclinó aún más, para presentar con mayor comodidad la fuente al cuchillo indeciso de la condesa. Pero su rostro descansó ese momento a pocos centímetros de las ondas dulcemente rizadas y perfumadas de su cabeza, y, cuando instintivamente alzó la mirada devota, sus ojos turbados vieron la suave y luminosa línea blanca con la que su cuello surgía de esa marea oscura y se perdía en el vestido rojo oscuro abullonado.
Una llamarada color púrpura lo invadió. Y el cuchillo vibró suavemente en la fuente, presa de un imperceptible temblor. Aunque en ese segundo François intuyó las graves consecuencias de este repentino hechizo, dominó hábilmente su agitación y siguió sirviendo con el entusiasmo reservado y un poco galante de un garçon de buen gusto.
Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) fue un escritor, novelista, dramaturgo y biógrafo austriaco que alcanzó la cúspide de su fama en los años veinte y treinta del siglo XX y sus obras fueron de las primeras en denunciar la intervención de Alemania en la Primera Guerra Mundial.
