Summary
Giovanni Lonardi era un emigrante veronese che viveva in Svizzera. Nell'aprile del 1915, tornato per un breve soggiorno in Italia, è stato arruolato e spedito al fronte. Lascia così moglie e tre bimbe a carico dei suoi poveri e vecchi genitori. Capita in un reggimento tra i più martoriati del fronte e scampa alla morte molte volte quasi per miracolo. Si comporta valorosamente tanto che si guadagna la croce di bronzo e il grado di sergente.
Nel 1917 durante una rischiosa missione è fatto prigioniero e viene internato in un campo di prigionia in Austria dove fame e freddo mietono quotidianamente molte persone. Per non morire di fame fugge e dopo molte peripezie riesce a rientrare in Italia.
Una storia terribile che descrive gli orrori di quella guerra e che è stata raccontata personalmente all'autore, nipote del protagonista, cinquanta anni fa. Ora questa vicenda è stata messa per iscritto perché è una preziosa e appassionante testimonianza che merita di essere ricordata. Da questo romanzo è stato ricavato anche il presente audiolibro.
